Hi,
Dont knwo if this is just me and i can only see 1 or 2 threads on this but...
I cant find anything to trade ! i checked the ENTIRE forge region and every single item had a lower sell price than its buy price, but because of the way the markets work you can put out a "Buy Order" for something at less than the stated current best price because it never shows up and you never buy antyhing from anyone.. the best you can do is match the price but that is a little silly !! :)
So i then tried doing inter-region stuff.. now this time i found a few routes to make.. so off i go in my little Bantam with ym Alpha Cargo Mod i stole from a pirate :) with a load off stuff to sell to make 2 isk per item (it was the ONLY thingy going !!) so i make like 10,000 isk after a 40 minute run of about 12 jumps !!! damn !!! :( i mean i can make more money in one mining trip and with 2 basic lasers it takes 6 mins round trip from the station !!!
so my question would be...
Realizing that if you have a larger cargo capacity then tading could be very profitable but with a small capacity it isnt worth doing (on a profit per minute basis) campared to mining stuff. but yet you cant buy a large enough ship for less than 750K isk so then you you are stuck in a bit of visous circle right? cant earn loads of money untill you have a big ship but u cant buy a big ship until you have loads of money !! :)
anyone got any ideas? i am about to buy a Badger MK2 and have 300K left in my bank account (waiting for skill !!!) so anyone got any suggestions??
or do i have to mine for 12 months !? lol

Dont stay in 1 system. I noticed that some prices are higher in some systems, so check out lonetrek and verge vendor prices and then look for yourself. System prices are basicly the same in the whole system, but from system to system the price may be diffrent

Thanks for the reply, but i tried that, there realy isnt much you can trade for any decent amount of money that i cant seem to make just mining (during the same time period anyways).
I suppose i shoudl realy ask if anyone has any ideas of what the best things to trade are, how much to trade and how/where to trade it. What should i be looking for?? FreakOfNature AKA: Freak.

to the best of my knowledge there are only 4 kinds of goods you can realy make monny on: robotics, antibiotics, spirits and frozen plant seeds (me and my 3 friends have made more than 30 mills in less than two weeks tradeing only in those goods).
The funny thing is that you need to have money to make money. So I wouldnŠt recomend to anyone to start tradeing unless you have no less then 2 million isk and a big ship (we started with 13M). |

you are in a perfect situation to trade dirt: high volume commodity, low price, high profit margin.
problem is once you have money, the absolute profit is pretty abysmal

we only spend 3-4 hours per day in this game and for the last week 2 of us were just killing pirates.
IŠm telling you robotics, antibiotics and spirits are the best (donŠt mind the frozen plant seeds)
btw, it was 40+ mills not 30+.
Good luck

Part of the problem may be that you're not looking deeply enough into the market.
Here's the trick: when you pull up the group view, either by expanding the 'trade goods' category or clicking on it to get the group list in the main window, that only shows prices for the current station. That works fine for supply, because NPC sell orders are always region wide. However, NPC buy orders are station only, so you'll only ever see buy orders listed there if there happens to be a demand at the station you're in.
In order to find out what demand is like across the region, you need to view the demand map for each individual item, and mouse over the demand bubbles for each system to see what typical prices are. Royal PITA.
There are generally at least a dozen or so routes available within a single region, with a handful available across regions for better profits. Profit margins for in-system routes tend to be around 10-15%. Some items have as high as 25% profit, but those are generally only available in very limited volumes, so you'll wind up having to make a lot of little runs to make any money.
Trade routes aren't limited to people in indys btw. There are a few items out there like Data Sheets with volumes around 0.01 m3. They tend to have very low profit margins, but even a Probe can completely eliminate supply in fairly short order. Hopefully with the next patch the market will be updated to something a bit more usable and people can get back to some serious trading.

Nevron has a very good point, you can't make a lot of money without spending a lot first.
Stick to mining/agents for a couple of weeks and make some money, then start the trading.
Or rob convoys, and get the goods for nothing ;) (note: will also require a bigger ship (600+cargo)) .

I think that the cycle you spoke of is made intentionally that way. If getting up loads of money to buy larger ships and such was quick then the game would have no point and we'd all be rich and have battleships. Just like real life, if you want lots of cash then work hard or find a financial secret that few know about. Man, when I get that second ship I want it to mean something. I want to know I earned it. Of course, that's just me. ;)

Don't forget that trading non-market items can often be worth it too. For example you might find a Bestower on one side of the galaxy for 550K, on the other side no-one will be selling them and you can sell for 800K. Or harvester drones, if you're willing to hang out in the trade channel you can easily shift them in units of 10 or so if you're somewhere central - often for prices close to 100K (less if you're out in the rim). And harvesters you can either pick up or buy in bulk from people at 60K. Ideal stuff for when those trade runs run dry for a few hours. Requires slightly more work, but the margins are high.
Have fun Finn
PS I should point out that nothing beats a decent inter-region commodity run for getting ISK

to everyone thankyou for the advise...
i actually now have a Badger MK2 that i got for a VERY good price, i also have an Alpha Cargo Mod (21.5%) and some other bits too.
I have found a few routes now that i hvae a large ship, the key is quantity i think. the downside is that you need the money to fill your cargo hold first and robots @700isk a go and 4300 cargo space it gets a little pricey !! :)
the returns at 10% are still VERY good for the sake of a 15minute run of jumps ! :)
thanks again.
