Wow, this thread sure proved OP's point all right. I love it when the haters post to say I'm not hating, I'm just disliking, I'm just discriminating, I'm just pointing out the truth in the stereotype, my friends like me when I call them ethnic names, this is a game so it's no big deal, and on and on. The best is when you say that there would be no ism if people like OP and the others in this thread weren't pointing it out.
Political correctness often goes too far, sure. But the haters always go too far, never stop with words. If you throw those words around in here I doubt very much you're any different in real life. You're just quieter. Because saying something like that in real life has consequences.
The use of the word r a p e in Eve is completely offensive to most women. It is used constantly.
The use of the word "gay" in Eve is completely offensive to a gay person. I am one so I know. Do I weep every time I read it? No. But I know who I'm dealing with. An idiot who doesn't bother to think before he speaks. Or worse.
Is any of this the end of the world? Not for me. I listen, I hear, and I play, smugly aware that I am dealing with players who have no sense of conscience, and who have no idea what it means to think about how their speech might affect other people. That's just like real life. Only people in real life are more guarded. When I come to Eve I see people as they really are: wretched haters who would rather reach for an easy slur that to think harder and write something else.
Who cares whether the rest of you get it? Nobody gets to tell me it's all right to use slurs about Jews, Muslins, women, gay people, or anybody else.
If nothing else, Eve gathers the lowest forms of life on the planet so that the rest of the planet can see just how much work there is left to do. There are many good people in Eve, too, but they tend to be silenced by the loud voices of the bigots and the smell of adolescent hormones still being released well into the 20s of most of the players.
It amazes me that I can type these horrible words into local chat without a problem but the forum won't let me. Makes it clear that much of this language could easily be cleaned up in the game.
But you really think if people just shut up about racism and all the rest that it would just go away? You could not possibly be more of a fool than that. |
