Given that all i do is play two accounts on eve with a bit of surfing. I dream of downloading at the same time but by the time i get a computer good enough to do that they'll have made down loading films and music illegal!
Can anyone recommend a good system (running two monitors a plus)
Quiet happy with classic but would think about premium graphics just as long as it all runs super smooth

You could easily build one for $700 with current hardware prices, check out newegg.

Edited by: Hiro Apropos on 02/10/2008 17:22:55 Heck with amd prices so low, you could build an AMD set up for around 500$ from NewEgg and include a monitor - I know, I just built one for a friend. However , the best way to do this would be to set up a price range. You can do a LOT for a little nowadays, but having a price makes it much easier.

With dual monitors you will need a bit more video omph. For dual client and dual display I would suggest looking at a quad core or perhaps the Phenom X3. The extra cores will handle the multitasking much better than a dual. With this kind of load I would go with Vista 64 for the OS and run at least 4 gigs of RAM. With all this in mind I would look at a 4870 for video. If you are staying with 19" monitors or less this should give you really nice detail levle and run smooth. If you are running bigger monitors to dual display two clients you might want to look at a crossfire system.
For what you are wanting to do I would not go cheap but you can keep the price reasonable. Going through Newegg I built a system around the Phenom X3 8750 BE on a 790GX motherbaord with 4 gig of RAM, a 4870 for video, good case and PSU with Vista 64. The system has no monitors or keyboard and it came to just under $900.
That system will smoke EVE, I run a similiar system here at the office, Phenom X4 9350, 780GX motherbaord, 4 Gig on a 4850 using Vista 64 and on my 19" monitor I run eve at 1440x900 and max out FSAA and AF using the high detail and average around 70 FPS.
The video card I suggested is a nice step up from mine, the processor has one more core but is slower and does not overl**** as well so in the end for gaming the X3 beats mine. SHould dual 19" monitor and dual client with EASE!

Would have to argue about HAVING to use the ATI at all, and Vista 64? naaaaah. You can run dual monitors quite handily with an 8800gtx at 1440x900 or even 1600x1200 and it will nail Eve no worries.
While I agree that 4 gig of ram is better to have (and which Vista 32 and XP handles just fine) , the Phenom doesnt hold a candle to a Wolfdale 2.53ghz dual core, which is in the same price range. Dual core still works, and is much much cheaper atm. You could DO a Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz for about the same price, but I would go Wolf. The 790 boards have had some major issues on release, and the x38/48 crowd runs much better without the driver issues.

Then a single 4850 would be perfect for this setup. I reason I suggest going ATI is using the new tools from ATI the platform can be overl****ed as a whole with ease and extend the life of the system.

I do not know if you have used 64 bit much but for me there is anoticable performance boost when running 64 bit with 4 gigs or more of RAM. Also the 64 bit version of windows seems more stable, has better security and the option to raise the RAM even higher.

WHen it comes to multitasking, especially dual game boxes I cannot agree here, the more cores the better. The Phenom x3 8750 is only about $14 more than the chip you listed and has much better performance in multitasking. The price drop in triple cores has really made buying a dual core a bad choice unless you want to go super budget low. Also as you can see the much much cheaper no longer applies.

Your about the same price is way off here as the Q6600 in an OEM, ie no fan model sells on Newegg for $180, $190 for a boxed, ie fan included edition. The Phenom 9950 which beats the Q6600 is available for $175 boxed, ie with fan in a Black Edition, unlocked multiplier.
The original 790 baords did suffer from dirver issues but that is hsitory, the current drivers are solid as a rock and the new 790GX boards using the SB750 allow for better overclocking and can be had at a reasonable price, $100 for the lowest cost one.
Now let me be fair here, there is NOTHING wrong with Intel products I use them all the time but for the home user from a budget consideration AMD can produce the same computing experience for less money and in some caseas at the lower end a BETTER computing experience for the same money.

I still dont think the AMD is better really - havent owned a triple core, but people I do know who have one say that it suffers when running multi aps at once, which is what I based my recommendation off of, although for a cheap budget setup that will run the game until they upgrade it again, it is indeed the cheaper way to go (thinking the older cores from 1st quarter).
The ATI I still dont like, the new gx2 really kill em for around the same price, although with Eve, as I said the 8800gtx is more than fine - if it was running say AoC x 2 on two monitors would say different.
The 64 bit windows when I used it last year still had a ton of issues with games and even just printers and such, if it has become better I retract my statement |

790i boards are NO No , and they did not suffer from driver problems ,they suffered from Data corruption problems http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3279&p=4
