I think you've misread this: "He was the last living creature aboard this ship"
Or perhaps this: "The hope of an entire race was dying along with him"
The phrase "last of his kind" is not in the book.

I read it a different way and based on criteria that CCP has show. Each of the races have 3 sub-races to it. In addition, there are NPC factions of the races - such as the Thukker. So, with this it can be preceived that the Jovians also have different sub-races. So "last of his kind" could (and IMO is) be in reference to a sub-race of the Jovian Empire. It also, only suggests that he is Jovian, I don't recall it ever saying "for sure" that he was. With this book being part of a Trilogy, I wouldn't count the Jovians out.

i think jove is in reseve in case either:
a: goonswarm get out of hand and invade the whole of NE.
b: the developers get sick of GTC price whining, get trashed on finlandia one night and decide to wipe us out with ships the size of pods that we have no dmg type for and can instapop 5Billion permaboosted factional CNR's in a complete WTF patch.
c: they get bought by EA and need to release a XBOX friendly blastempup EVE that doesnt need a MIT doctorate to work out how to work the starmap.
