Thanks to /b/ et al, Rick Astley has now been shortlisted for the MTV Europe's award for best act ever. Today is a great day.

"Rick's fans have obviously decided that he deserves recognition as a pop icon and no doubt they are determined to make sure he wins on the night," said the award show's producer Richard Godfrey.
Priceless. There needs to be a Mastercard commercial for this.
Oh, and:
"The star, who has never been nominated in the history of the event, is up against U2, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day and Tokio Hotel."
Keep in mind this is for "best act ever".
I've heard of everyone but Tokio Hotel, who either misspelled their name or are too unknown for the BBC to bother to spell it properly. But, yeah, you've got two female performers best known for their boobies and other assorted naughty bits, a band I've never heard of, someone who's best known as a running Internet gag and from his Family Guy parody, a pretty good band whose last album rocked, and U-f'ing-2, headlined by the King of Ireland himself, Bono.
They might as well have made this a battle between a bunch of guys from your local high school marching bands and Mozart. Even if you don't like U2, you've got to admit they've got more talent in their collective pinkie than at least 4 of the rest combined.
If U2 doesn't win, I say we nuke Europe -- well that's going too far, they've got great architecture and historical sites, so N-bombs are probably a better choice -- and move on.
I mean, this is what I really hate about these types of awards: 95% of the nominees are based on their popularity now, rather than their lasting contributions and history. If this were "best act of the year", fine, whatever. But "ever"? U2 would have to work pretty damn hard even to make that cut.

I was about to quote that as well. It is simply more proof that the entertainment industry and the media don't understand their audience, and especially how they are clueless about internet culture. Rickrolling is a joke, and Astley got voted in as a joke, yet this guy and the reporter seem to be thinking their own little music biz fantasy world way of thinking where everyone buys into their neat little system of consumerism. The same world where reality shows are the real thing, award shows are the perfect fantasy everyone is eager to witness and scantily clad movie stars come to charity events to make speeches about women's rights while they are not busy showing their boobs on camera to sell the latest potential hollywood blockbuster (Seriously now, Halle Berry's nipples is the only memorable moment from Swordfish. Allah forgive me). It's a fantasy that the people in the biz are too dedicated at upholding it seems they start to believe in it given enough time. Retailer first, human being second.
I'm glad game developers are still mostly gamers, making tributes to internet culture and gamers. I watched the Team Fortress 2 trailer called "Meet the sniper" and had a good laugh when he goes "boom, headshot" with professional assassin kind of tone in his voice.
The music and movie industry has distanced itself from it's consumers to a point where they are an entirely artificial world.
The media has gotten so used to simplifying the truth and keeping it short that information becomes omitted and distorted and, to the critical eye, nonsensical or even misleading. I've been quoted in papers and magazines a few times in my life, and in every single article they got me wrong or invented something to make the story easier to sell.

Having said that, there's a question that really bugs me; How often has Rick Astley been rick rolled and how does he feel about that?
Personally I wouldn't show up for the sheer humiliation of it.

Listen to the dev commentary of TF2. Those guys have brains, and they use them.
Now take a step back and have a look at all those other releases in the last ... 2 or 3 years, and tell me, the gaming industry is any better than the MTV ******s and their consumers.

The music industry, like many others learned, to maximize sales they need to market to teenage girls. The rest will flock. Repackage every 5-6 years and you have a whole new group of guinea pigs.
This is atrocious. U2 hands down should win, but I think it would be great mockery if any of the others win

U2 atleast has a carreer that could deserve an Award like that, but the rest... just modern bull. But it's the current generation of MTV viewers that votes, so it'll be acts they know and love that get in. (And obviously Rick Astley got in because of Rick Roll MTV votes) There are so many great bands from earlier times that deserve this award more, but MTV is just making money and this gets them the best ratings.

U2 is the only bad on that list that does not make me feel embarrassed to be a human. Where's the Beatles? For that matter, where's Mozart? This was an award voted on by MTV fans (*shudder*) and /b/(*double shudder*), and it shows. The only way you could make it worse would be to put Wesley Willis on the list. ------------------ Herschel's Lottery #1 - Win a Kronos! |

I gotta say I've got new respect for Rick after reading that. He actually gets it, and that's more than I can say for anyone else involved with this debacle.
I hope U2 wins, Bono says, "WTF are you people thinking? Have you never heard of [insert countless bands/performers]?"

Yah, I'd agree.
U2's last album of original merit was put out in 1984... 24 years ago!
Biases aside, it's just foolish to name sonething as best "ever". We'll all have our own personal preferences (Britney vs. Black Sabbath, anyone?)
Then again, MTV itself hasn't really been relevant for a few decades either. Where do they get the authority to even give such an award?
...though I did find the rick-roll of that one baseball game (forgot the stadium) kinda funny.

The Backstreet Boys are back. Or is it New Kids?
And Ozzy would bite Britney's head off, forget he'd done it, and ramble incoherently at the cops about it:D ____ English doesn't borrow from other languages; it follows other languages down dark alleys, coshes 'em, then rummages in their pockets for loose bits of grammar. |

No, it doesn't. But A) U2 has had merit far beyond 1984. B) You mean Shay stadium, home of the Mets (I'm kinda scarred that I know this, since I deplore baseball as a viewing medium; it's damn fun to play though).
