Ok...now, I understand that people make mistakes and that none of us are perfect, but...seriously...why is this mix-up between "your" and "you're" so prevalent across the net? Maybe I'm just ranting, but to me, it's quite ludicrous when someone mistakes them. I mean...seriously....
They don't even sound the same... You know, I like to believe that people make this mistake on purpose...like some kind of universal joke that I missed out on, but honestly....I don't know anymore...
The worst thing is, I don't really know why this bothers me so much...Maybe I'm getting too old....but I also know I'm not the only one with this pet peeve

I'm with you. There are many like us, because you often see people correcting those who say "your" instead of "you're". It wouldn't be so irritating if only people who'se primary language is something other than English would make this mistake, but native speakers are the worst culprits in my experience! People who say "You're" when they should be using "Your" stand out even more, but they are also much more rare.
I know someone is thinking of posting something along the lines of "spelling is not important as long as you make yourself understood". That's just an excuse for laziness. It's a serious issue. I see people writing in work related and bureaucratic circumstances and they come off as 5th grade dropouts. Writing well ("well", not "good") is a good insight into how educated you are and that influences how people regard you. If writing is the only contact you have with a person you should make sure to handle the language correctly as to not give the impression that you're a lazy slob who doesn't care.
"This is the internet, you have to be time efficient". Time efficiency is good, but the difference between mashing the keyboard and taking the extra time to back up when you get a word wrong is MARGINAL. If you know the language and are somewhat comfortable finding your way around the keyboard, you should consistently get it right. While typing that sentence I accidentally wrote "consistenlty". I noticed it right away and hit backspace three times in only a few milliseconds and finished the word correctly. The time wasted was utterly marginal and made no difference in real life. Get it right, it's a valuable skill to have in life. Lying to yourself that it doesn't matter doesn't make it go away.
Mistakes are fine, when they are mistakes. When they are routine, they're not fine. [/grammar naughtzee] _______ Griefing is to ruin a friendly game, which Eve is not. |

Actually they do But along with the mixup with there/their/they're, it's a fairly common mistake, and despite knowing full well the difference between all of the above, I'm guilty of making the odd mistake, usually when I'm typing in haste and my fingers work faster than my brain. It's not necessarily bad grammar, just hasty typing errors. I'm also guilty of using 'it's' instead of 'its' on occasion, even knowing full well it's incorrect...maybe I just need to slow down on the keyboard
The only one that winds me up is one I think is predominantly made by native english speakers, specifically those in the UK, where 'of' is used incorrectly instead of 'have'. eg. I would of gone but I was busy. I think that one's down to how many pronounce that same sorta phrase when speaking and it carries into typed text too. -------------

This is not a business proposal, this is not my resume, this is not my thesis, hell yall do not even know who the hell I am
I type fast at work and sometimes have to hit post before I am quite ready. A quick scan is not always going to pick up that mistake. Not everyone wants or should have to take the extra step to copy/paste every response into Word to make sure you appease everyone. I find these type of mistakes in some of the top literature I have read. Do I stop reading the book because of it? No. I move on. No one is perfect.
As pointed out, I think it is worse that you think the your and you're sound so different that they could not be mistaken for each other by non-native speakers. Also are you 100% sure that everyone that makes this mistake is in fact a native speaker? Was this really necessary for you to let us know that you individually take offense to this.
Hell I think it is quite laughable that you did not not even try to make sure that non-native speakers know the difference, LMAO!!!! If oy had done that then your crusade would have surely stopped the incorrect use of the words by non native speakers and thus everyone that made the mistake form now one would then be identified as an ignorant native speaker
P.S. I wonder if you can pick out my usage of typically hated "word"

woah buddy... first of all, who said anything about being on a crusade? This is the "out of pod experience" forum so basically anything goes, figured I'd share my thoughts like countless others have already done. If you don't like it, shut up and move on. Do you feel empowered to voice a negative opinion at someone and try to smite them with your uncanny and awesome powers of rhetoric?
Secondly, there is a sound difference between "you're" and "your". At least there is where I am from.
your /yʊər, yɔr, yoʊr; unstressed yər/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[yoor, yawr, yohr; unstressed yer]
you're (yŏŏr; yər when unstressed)
Though I do realize that in most western English dialects unstressed pronunciations are a lot more common than enunciated ones.
I understand that different dialects dictate different perceptions of what is indeed "correct" and "not correct", though I never intended to start on a tirade against which dialect is the uber-est. None of them are.
Thirdly, your whole point about non-native speakers....laughable. I spent the last three years in Tokyo dealing specifically with non-native speakers and, honest to god, not a single person that I met during that time ever made the "your" "you're" mistake. (when it came to written work). All my students knew more about English grammar than a lot of native speakers I know...so don't even try to go there. They did make mistakes pronouncing "election" as "erection" but....that's another case all together...
Can "your" and "you're" be mistaken? Sure, of course they can....but honestly why should they be allowed to? Allowing such a thing to go on and not standing up and saying something is the first step in allowing a language to deteriorate. I'm not saying that this is the beginning to the end of the English language, I'm just saying that justifying a mistake should never be the due course for any action. A mistake is a mistake, an error is an error.
"Sorry boss, I made a mistake last night when I chose to sleep with your wife...no, but it's ok really, it's not a big deal because we both had fun!"
riiight...that would still allow you to keep your job right?
Also, and as a final point. What makes you think that those two words are so similar in sound that they have to sound just as similar in all other places in the world where English is used? Now who's the arrogant one...

Your just being nit picky. Does it really matter what there spelling of the word is? Everyone knows its what they mean.
PS: I agree
My grammar peeves are "i" instead of "I" and "teh"... Seriously, I've seen 500 word post on these (and other) forums where every single "The" was typed as "teh".
PPS: (or is it PSS? .. what does PS stand for anyways?... crap I got side-tracked again) "Your a idoit" boggles my mind how so many people can completely botch such a short sentence. __________________________________________________________

kinda like seeing read and read

go read a book
your brain (well my brain, and hopefully other peoples brains) automatically distinguish them, even in longer sentences

Well, anyway, bottom line is, if you can't be bothered to spell right (or at least mostly right if English is not your main language), then one could assume you can't be bothered to make an effort to make sense, so it's relatively safe to assume misspelled posts have (on average) a lower intellectual value.
In other words, bad spelling aproximately equals lousy post content with a fairly high degree of confidence. The reverse is sadly not true... you can have perfect spelling and it still doesn't mean your post is better than average.
