The nerf hammer eventually hits everything, is it worth dedicating months of training for a ship?
What would you think are the lines of training least likely to meet this menace?

I would say the opposite, allmost in all instances your specialization is transferable to another ship with minimal effort. Not specializing will just let you be average in all areas of the game.

Specialize in a style or class of ship, not in some arcane combination that's going to be nerfed.
I specialize in small ships and scouty-type stuff. They'll never nerf "small ships" or "big ships". The nerf-bat falls on stupid or overpowered combinations of items or skills. Specialize away, but don't specialize in flavor of the month, or you'll be a sad panda.

Just do what I do, train all ships of all races and you'll never be sad again
Though, what OP said, don't train flavor of the month setups and you'll be fine. BS with all tech 2 support skills and gunnery/missiles T2 will never be out of flavor.

I would actually advice against that until solid specc, if you have inty V and relatated speed / cap skills to V then sure crosstrain to get more inties.
Training all races before you can use 1 comfotably will just mean you can't use anything good. I usually advice ppl that want to pvp and are low in the SP bracket to start training for inties, useful ships that you can get into relatively quickly. Then just keep skilling til you have your fitting/cap/speed more or less maxed out, then proceed to skill another spec, usually cruiser sized ships ie hacs etc. just skill up spec there like med guns t2, t2 tank etc. then proceed to wither broaden small ships to recons/logistics/eas etc or go up in scale and start working those BS's

Stupid as it sounds training for the FOTM has left me with a diverse set of skills that I now find indispensable today. Although I've previously regretted 'wasting time' on specific set-ups, I've come to appreciate the choice and adaptability that is on hand at any given time.

Specialize in the nanos, surely they shall never nerf the nano.
Or will they?
But on a slightly more serious note, I've noticed a trend; They tend to squash ships from the top (big) down, to make room for bigger ships. So frigates (especially tech 1 / noob ships) should be the least affected for the longest time.
By the way, how much for that sig space?

Absolutely refusing to specialize in anything is like hitting yourself in the face with a nerf bat.
Ideally, you train for what you want, not the uberwtf FOTM pwnsauce ship.

Well I'm currently specializing into frigates. As has been said, they won't ever nerf the whole range of ships. So there will always be a boost and a nerf to small ships, big ships etc.
Plus when you have your supports up...specializing into a another ship will take max one month (unless it's capitals etc).

Hell once you start getting some SP, say recon V all support skills maxed in one race, it doesnt even take a month to get more or less maxed in another race's system, IE falcon -> curse/pilgrim etc.

Some good advice here, id like to add from bitter experience the perils in training for a single race. I chose gallente from the start coz I liked the drone concept. Ever since I started they have been nerfed with every patch, to the point where patch day was something dreaded, it became known as nerf day.
I chose to take that specialization to the max. So for example, the racial e-war of gallente I trained to level 5 skills throughout, despite the small gains for the time investment. Sadly this e-war became FOTM for everyone else and instead of slightly rebalancing, they got nerfed into uselessness. The pain I felt from seeing a third of my ships and the skillpoints invested in them totally wiped out has never really left me, and broken a lot of the love I had for this game.
However, I kept the account going and tried to make the best of the remaining ships worth flying. Sadly the upcoming speed nerf which isnt even aimed at gallente looks like its going to nerf the blaster ships into uselessness, although there is some hope CCP have noticed this, since the speed nerf has been delayed. Should they take a hit in any way, only a handful of drone ships will be usable, which for the time and skillpoints invested is too much pain to enjoy the game anymore.
I am currently afk cross-training out of this race, but not sure if I will ever have the same enthusiasm I had for the game as I did for the first couple of years.
So back on topic, do not under any circumstances specialise in a race, but in a ship class/size instead.
I have been open and honest here, and as a result expect flames from people loving the taste of gallente tears. To those I can honestly say there are no tears, I held this game in too high regard for way too long, and spend my time far more constructively now, and have learned valuable lessons from the experience

Specialize in weapons and items, not in ships.
Then all of your ships are nasty.
Before i get into a new class of ship I always make sure the support skills are sturdy first.

I never had months of dedicated training for any ship, and even though I (in practice) flew a Crusader 80% of the time, most of my navigation skills were at lvl4 for more than a year of flying such (some at lvl3 even).
The only 'specialism' really neccessary (because the difference is just too great otherwise) is t2 guns for your favorite line of ships.

Starting with racial specialization is a good IMHO. At any time each race has a pwnmobile or two, with quite a few other ships very workable. And once your support is up to snuff you can cross train really fast. -- I'm done whining about AFs, it looks like they are making them right \o/ |

I would say I'm solidly specced in my race.. I got BS V and all related support skills V a year ago...
