Even if it wouldn't be very useful, it would be pretty damn cool. Do it!

I want the ability to create/store 3d formations.
example.
Someone has a gate camp going.
You may want a predesigned formation so you can warp in, have your heavy hitters land on the gate within range, while haveing your ECM/snipers land xxxkm off the gate, with your nano ships landing 50km below the gate, with your logistics ships landing 25km off the gate.
Set it up so that as you warp, you click on the fleet window, go to a formation drop down, click on the description of your formation, and your ships shift to that formation while in warp, and land that way.
Or others. Have A gate be your warp to point, and have everyone in the gang warp to the gate in a sphercial formation say 225km from the gate, so your snipers land on the gate in a sphere type formation with everyone being at optimal range.
Or you may want to warp to a gate in a small sphere so everyone lands in a 15km sphere so they can more easily catch folks jumping through the gate.
Or you may want a "tackle" formation. warp to 10km from a covops frig. Have a HIC land at 0km on the hostile, with a few blaster boats landing 2.5km behind, and some snipers/ecm/logistic ships landing 50km behind them.
Would most likely need an in game 3d tool for creating and storeing your formations.
Preferably with a way for corps/alliance's to setup standard ones that can be saved at the CEO level, and available to everyone in the corp(GOOD FC's would never use these other then in basic situations, GOOD FC's would have a whole slew of custom ones of their own makeing.

I agree that formations would be extremely fun, even if it didn't convey any advantages in combat. However, I'd say that organization is a weapon in itself. What is more worrying? A blob of mixed ships, or a fleet in formation with squadrons in Delta, Claw, Wall formations? (sorry, Homeworld reference)
Having bonuses to formations might even tempt people to take those t1 cruisers into fleet fights. Dividing the existing ships into categories that define their function and applying a boost to the stats when in a formation corresponding to their role.
e.g. Caracal (or Vexor/Maller): ship of the line: 10% bonus to range and shield hp, -10% speed when in a line or wall formation with a squadron composed of ships of the line. (you basic cruisers, in a defensive posture that can still advance with a barrage of fire)
e.g. Thorax (or Rupture/Omen): assault craft: 10% bonus to speed and damage, -10% lock range when in a delta formation with a squadron composed of assault craft. (again, basic cruisers, but geared more towards breaking formations like the wall/line apart, moves fast, hit's hard)

I used to think that formations would be a good addition, but I gave that belief up. Why should people have it that easy? Steer your failboat into the right position on your own, you lazy gits
Even if you did add a feature that put certain ship classes in front of others, in a lag fight it won't make a difference anyway.
Manually organized formations would really only become important if friendly fire and tactical environments were added. Friendly fire would also reduce blob lag, because people wouldn't keep bringing a disorganized blob of 300 people to a fight if they knew that half their ships would be shooting other friendlies due to their random placement in the blob. Being able to move into a formation automatically would negate that limiting factor and continue the tradition of fleet lag.

Last I heard about formations talked about from a dev was to creat 'battlegroups' of similar mission roled ships to combine into a unified hp and added bonus for that 'formation' of ships.
There would be various types of formations and each one got its own bonus, intercept formation would like use 3 interceptors to form the interception formation and gain a speed bonus for hypotheical example.
However that was months ago and possibly no longer how its going to be.

Originally by: 5pinDizzy So not only have we got to be ordered around by some asshat on comms in a large fleet to have any sort of real success in pvp, soon they might be able to control our ships movement directly by pushing formation buttons?
yaaay
They can already do that. This would make it more convenient and useful, especially for situations where groups need to be together such as titan jump portals and remote repper gangs.

Yeah, maybe this is like those old Voltron anime, where various ships assemble to form up a device of epic butt kicking proportion.
Dominix: "I'll form the head." Apoc x 2: "We'll form the arms." Megathron: "I'll form the body." Rokh x 2: "We'll form the legs" Thorax: "I'll be the wang, I guess."

Originally by: Reaver One I think formations are only a good idea as "Warp to Formation" commands for smaller engagements (like FW and roaming gangs). Coming out of warp with the tanks and tacklers front and center and the snipers, nano and EWAR in the rear would be useful, but once out of warp folks should be piloting their own ships.
Large fleets already do this by warping by wing and whatnot, but it would be a nice addition to the game.
This would be pretty neat.

Reminds me of the fleet combat in the Lensmen books.
