As you all know, EVE has been based on the premise of a people that have been cut off from thier original homeworld and had to survive in the harsh conditions of space with limited resources and thus far have been fighting eachother to claim thier own little areas. While this has been interesting and led to many battles, some of epic proportions, others just scratching to stay alive in a one on one pvp situation.
I was just thinking that maybe some players tire of the constant politics and infighting in the deep reaches of space that pit us against eachother in a never ending cycle untill finally we just hate everyone. Yeah I know some people love this aspect of the game but what if there was something new that instead of dividing everyone it brought them all together? Something that unified them in a way that nothing else could? A common enemy that all 4 races had to deal with or face extinction? A new threat that loomed on the horizon. A mysterious enemy that challenged all of the 4 races to work together to defeat?
Yes, I know we have factional warfare allready, but that is really another excuse to fight eachother. What if something happened, as does many times, where during our strugle with eachother, we stumbled upon a new race who claimed the EVE universe as thier home? One that looked on our petty bickering with despise and contempt. One that saw us as a virus or vermin that desperatly need to be eradicated. A new race that we know nothing about with new technologies that shook our understanding of science to it's very core.
It could start with attacks in the outter reaches of the known universe and escalate into the very heart of our "civilized" systems. EVE empires could be unified in thier efforts to combat the ensuing threat. Old long time enemies would be forced to put aside thier differences, if only for a short while, to ensure the survival of the human race. The great Amarr empire working side by side with it's former Minmatar slaves as equals for the first time. The Caldari nation sharing plans and resources with thier long time rival Gallente foes gaining a new understanding between them.
All 4 NPC empires supporting all capsuleers in thier efforts to fight and survive this new threat with ISK and ships at thier disposal (Due to the rapid deployment of these ships to combat the new threat the targeting systems only seem to be able to target the enemy and not other players) to combat the ongoing onslaught.
Awe inspiring fleet battles never before seen by players new and old in high security (hopefully the less traveled systems to prevent too much lag) with even concord involved in the battles.
Perhaps new versions of capital ships that can only be used against this new enemy and cannot target other players of the human race. Secret missions to infiltrate and perform espionage on a whole new level to capture enemy plans and new technology to be used against them. Raids on the enemy supply lines and enemy ships trying to gather our own resources that we have been fighting over for decades...how dare they?!! Medical missions to understand the enemy and how to better kill them. A war of such magnitude and scope that it stretches on for what seems like an eternity...untill...
The posibilities are almost endless here and I leave it to the devs to see what they think of the whole idea. I have some other ideas for the scenario that I would rather disscuss with the devs so as to not give too much away. The whole plan I have is to just add another aspect to EVE for some players that feel they have seen it all in EVE and to give everyone something new and exciting to share in. I'm sure not everyone would agree with this idea, but hey, you can allways stay with the way you play now. I also believe it might be cool if new players could see some major fleet battles in high sec to see what they will be training for in the future without having to wait on skills and being able to build up thier assets. |

The greatness of eve is the player built parts of it. Player economies, player rivalries, player politics, and player empires... Sure there is room for some PvE and stories for those who want them, but don't try to change eve in to something the vast majority of players came here to avoid.
Now if your wanted to set all the empires against BOB, and give players free ships to attack BOB with... that could be fun... |

You did not read what I wrote at the end.
"I'm sure not everyone would agree with this idea, but hey, you can allways stay with the way you play now."
So if you are not ready for a change then you wouldn't nessecarily have to participate. I know some players are happy with EVE the way it is now and there is nothing wrong with that. What I am proposing is something new for players that would like a change in the routine. To add another aspect to the game that perhaps other players would enjoy.
So don't be so quick to shoot down a new idea. There are many different players in EVE with thier own opinions and not everyone likes the same thing. Some people only like to mine and build stuff...others only like pvp...some only like missions...and some like combinations and variety.
This could add a whole new demension to the game that could give players even more choices. To be honest, I fail to see how giving players more content would "change eve in to something the vast majority of players came here to avoid."
As I said before it could be an optional thing kind of like factional warfare but with a twist. And the ships you get could not be used against other players, so this would be kind of like having a co-op part of the game that would really not effect the " Player economies, player rivalries, player politics, and player empires" that you enjoy.
As for this part... "Now if your wanted to set all the empires against BOB, and give players free ships to attack BOB with... that could be fun..."
That would effect all of the things you listed and I doubt BoB or the devs would go along with that. |

If players are flying around highsec fighting this new enemy they aren't out in PVP; they aren't out building empires. If players are flying special free ships, they aren't buying and risking player made ships. If these new ships can't target other players I presume they are staying in highsec, more to do in highsec is the last thing eve needs. Finally free ships breaks the risk vs reward concept that is so central to the heart of eve.
Fundementally you cannot shift eve towards PvE without shifting it away from PvP... It may not be a zero sum game, but it is close. |

Well I got news for you...there are many players who do not PVP. There are also players who build thier own stuff. There are many players who do not belong to alliances or even a corp. Why do you suppose that is? Maybe they don't want to do those things. Maybe they are not like you. Maybe they are bored with the way EVE is now. Maybe they have done all those things and would like something different. Maybe this would attract new players that never played EVE before or bring back old players that found EVE boring.
You are assuming everyone thinks and likes the same things you do. And I allready told you it is an optional thing but you just can't seem to grasp the concept. All you seem to get out of it is some idea of free ships that I never even said. EVE has plenty of alliances allready. People are free to join any one of them and go try and take over some area of space...that would not change. It is just an idea. The details haven't even been worked out yet. And I never said it was limited to high-sec. Maybe other players could not target them either. They would be fighting an enemy so saying there was no risk is ludicrous.
I also said that the battles in high-sec would be in low traffic systems...but you didn't read that either. So maybe you should just pretend you never read this because all you seem know of EVE is pvp so this is obviously not for you. |

Now being serious..
I find your idea intriguing (<-spelling? lol), and the entity is already in place: Jove.
However i find it hard to see how such a thing could mesh with the current EVE way of life. Sure you dont HAVE to join in, but it seems doubtful that many major opposing allainces would fight together unless they had too...
Perhaps a second server with the new EVE gate opeing or something.. Awesome EVE history

Yeah I was thinking maybe a second server too really, but I don't know if CCP would be able or willing to have another server. But I also think that EVE has been getting pretty crowded and with all of the server lag, traffic advisories, node crashes, and such it's becoming clear that alot of problems could be fixed with another server in place. There are alot of players I have seen that stay in high-sec and do missions and/or mining with no desire to get involved with low-sec or 0.0 space.
So I thought that maybe they might find this a bit more interesting. Maybe some people might like more of a storyline to follow or just wanna try something a little different. This would also give the devs a chance to be a little more creative in ship designs, storylines, new weapons, missions, and alot of other things.
I had an idea that there could be a little monitor you could watch while docked at a station with broadcasts of news and events relating to the invasion of this new enemy and maybe some small FMVs for major events just to liven things up and keep you on your toes. With streaming videos of systems and stations under siege inbetween advertisements for Quaffe, cloning facilities, and the latest ship designs from Roden shipsyards and stuff. TV programing from the future sort of thing. Unlike the billboards that have no audio and just repeat the same wanted posters over and over with all the blurry scanlines...this could even be done live from CCP using thier reporters to keep it interesting.
The game allready has audio chat in place so I suppose you could have a certain channel to recieve the audio from. Players could watch for hints and news of skirmishes going on near them and grab a ship and go fight. The enemy could be an NPC entity or maybe some GMs and devs paticipating or a combination of both to make things interesting. The idea would be to try and keep the storyline going and conditions ever changing so it's not so much like the current rigid missions in EVE where you allready know what you are facing and how best to fight it.
CCP has some wonderful writers doing the EVE Chronicles allready (yeah I read them now and then) so I'm sure they could come up with some plot twists and fun storylines.
