I was wondering I am little new to this game only 3 months but I was wondering if they are running linux servers for the game and if so why don't they have a linux client for people to run this game on a linux box. I like linux and want to compare the linux running game to a xp running game. just wondering

Ummm... ok You dont need a Linux server to use a Linux client. I asked one of the CCP folks a long time ago and was told they do not have plans at this time for a Linux client. I would guess it is another secret M$oft backroom deal so they get a better per seat on the servers. That is just a guess though. If they DID make a Linux Client I bet they would see at least a 10% increase in subscriptions though. I personally know at least 20 folks who use Linux as their desktop of choice.
I would be nice to have a choice.. Some of the most Famous FPS games have released a Linux Client.

I saw someone who posted a while back on how to get eve to run on Linux. It took some doing but according to what that person was saying it was possible and things ran smoothly once he had performed the steps he outlined.
Sorry I'm not more help, as I don't have a link or anything. Just a post to let you know that if you search hard enough you'll find what you're looking for. ------------------------------------- // The views expressed by this poster are not the views of the poster's corporation, alliance, planet or television network... but they should be. |

Think you Mean KIAHicks...or maybe Inkz.... what the hell...was one of them.... the client had a few problems running under Linux with the display not showing properly.... but other than that....seemed OK.

The main problem eve has that needs to be resolved is the fact that it uses DirectX. There is no DirectX for linux. Linux Supports OpenGL only. Therefore a Linux client would require all the directx code converted into opengl code. Thats how programs like Wine work.

Your Tachyon Beam Laser I places an excellent hit on arkad [MOO], inflicting 702.3 damage.

Programs like wine convert all D3D code to OGL? Not really huh. At least you made it sound like that

There is a Windows/D3D -> Linux/OpenGL converter... it used to be called winex, but it seems that they changed it to Cedega recently. You can (probably) find it here as soon as they complete their website rebuild.

they are in league with the devil server and client wise ;(.
The game is written around the DX gaming library for gfx/sound etc and as such is tied to M$ platforms, Maybe when somebody does a port of DX9 to linux or well open source (BSD>linux IMHO) then it may happen. The client code is python mainly and as such would be portable. But given the work involved in multi platform game releases and the setup, I'm afraid its not goona happen. Maybe Eve-2 will have a nice portable gfx/sound library to draw on for use, But beyond the OpenGL gfx, its still an area that is devoping. There are a few portable libs out there, but the performance/feature/stability/roubustness of them as a whole still needs a little more work. Hell if we had fast enough PC's they could write it in java and we could run in a web browser - scary thought but one day it will become viable. Given that games of 10 years ago port (due to requirments) to java, but that again is still a long way of.
Scary thought here, do you reckon that mobile phones will eventualy dictate a global gaming standard eventualy, and what kinda of specs will tomorrows mobiles have. AS with any great idea, one day, but not today.

Some people I know have DX9 games working with wine (not winex), though you'd most probably have to work out a new wine setup for every major patch.
