Okay, here's the situation: in the next month or so I'm going to be getting a new graphics card to replace my 7900GS, which is developing some rather strange display issues. I'd prefer to go nVidia again, and I'm looking for midrange cards. At the moment I've got my eye on this, but I've heard there's not much difference between the 88xx and 98xx series, so is it worth paying a bit more for the 9800?

That gives you a pretty easy way of looking at the performance of the current crop of cards, against the one game which is known to be a system breaker.
As for the 9800GT, looks good, but will depend on the resolution I guess.

Why would you want to buy Nvidia?
The 4850 is far superior to any crap they've put out. (And ATI beats Nvidia over the head with price-performance in this, don't even suggest the 2xx series)

The 9800GT is exactly the same card as the 8800GT.
Best bang-for-buck on the market right now is the Radeon HD4850 512MB. If you don't feel like stretching to that, you could wait a couple of weeks for the HD4830 to be released. It's the same as the 4850 but with 640 stream processors instead of 800. It's expected to give roughly 10% to 20% greater performance over the 9800GT, and be roughly the same price (if not cheaper).

Sounds like the HD4830's what I'll go for then, thanks

Edited by: Tiberius Maddox on 06/10/2008 05:13:01 Nvidia's new mid-range card is the 260GTX. Those are going for around $260US.

You might want to check out what's being said on the internet about nvidea cards especially ones in laptops, it's not good, and mine is getting changed for the 7th time in 3 years. Couple of examples here if they let the links live.

Eh, if hes really struggling the 8800GT can be had for around $120ish USD. Not sure if it sells differently over there. I run it at 1920x1200 full blast and eve runs smooth. (Even with forced 4x AA)

I found a 4850 for a decent price in the end, so that's what I bought. Customer reviews on the site said it'll run pretty much anything at the moment, which sounds good for ú100!

Everyone here has suggested the same kind of equipment, but there are a few of things that we need to identify before you make your choice.
1 - Budget 2 - Resolution 3 - Requirements (bit of a broad area)
Ok budget first. How much do you want to spend (i.e as little as possible), and how much can you stretch to? This will have a dramatic effect on what you do pick up. You've said mid-range but for me this is anywhere from ú100 to ú200.
Resolution - if you only play at 1280 x 1024 then you may not need one of the later models, an 8800GT can play Crysis at High detail at this resolution, so anything additional MAY be a waste.
Requirements - What games do you play, if you want to play the latest stuff (and future releases at high detail/resolutions) then a newer card would be better. if you only play EVE and Solitaire then an older card would do you just as well.
In short tho, most people have said what i would recommend on the face of things, you could get away with an 8800GT (which is what i'm currently using til my next upgrade), but if you want a bit more future-proofing with some of the stuff that is coming out then the ATI 4850/70 may be what you should take a look at.
On a related note your 7900 may just be overheating, get a can of compressed air, open your case and give it a clean, this may help with your display problems. I would probably recommend you do this anyway as newer cards are even worse with heat (4870 X2 and 280GTX get stupidly hot from what i've read) =============================================

The crap about the nVidia cards having a high rate of failure is bulls***.
AMD/ATi's cards are getting the same crap, just so you know.
I'm going to be getting a 9800GTX+ soon hopefully.

cheaper end of the scale, you'll have the 88/9800GT's, the 260, and ATI's 4850. All good cards.
Going up, its a tossup atm between the 280 and ATI's 4870x2. -

Where do you get your idea that this is bull? Have you actually read the articles and googled more on the subject?
The fact that nvidea shareholders went into meltdown with nvidia themselves, about the news being kept from them is one indication it's more than bull.
The people who are repairing my laptop, yet again, have a queue going back several months of others also waiting for replacement graphics cards as they cannot get enough from nvidia, the repairing engineers have known of the problem for over a year. You should see their forums.
Do you think nvidia would have let those articles and others similar live if they were untrue?

No it isn't. Certain batches from nVidia have a near 100% failure rate.

re: NV = fail. i had to help fix a freinds PC, he had a 8800GTS , it had a faulty fan, and then sla-gged itself down and started generating artifacts, was real funny testing it with 3dmark, the b17's had no mapp and the sky background was a mustang mapp. the smoke was showing up as translucent long thin rectangles. he got it changed for another 8800GT, still a trashy card, had a fan fault, but managed to save it, by fitting fans to the case to blow cold air across the card. IMO. i dont like the mid-high end NV cards.(and from all the fallout about the mess they got with suppliers changing the chemical composition of backing board of the GPUchips, they are all junk as no one will trust them for at least a year or more). stuff like this bancrupted a few graphics card makers in the late 90's.
i am currently runnning on a Powercolor9256 and a GeCubeHD2400XT2(quad head)
i managed to mash the settings on a AGP NV6200a(nv43) (after reseting the pipelines to a 6600)split screen raster in middle of display.(i gave up trying to save the card), ill just get another ATI. when they have 43xx/45xx on sale |
