Just now I was running around canflipping and found a great haul of veldspar. I got most of it with my hauler and came back in my Rifter to find a hostile Thorax which I decided to engage. It was up-close so his guns did little damage to me, however the 5 warrior drones were plinking away at my tank. So I decided to kill them first.
About halfway through the fight he webbed me (surprised it took so long) and that's when his guns started ripping me to shreds. Overall I was really proud of how long I held up and my cap being good all the way through. Even though I lost my frig I still made a slight profit on the deal. But I'm wondering if it would have been different had I not gone at the drones.
So in a situation like that, did I make the right move? Or should I have attacked him directly and forgot the drones?

Assuming both pilots are equally skilled at their respective ships, you should never attack a cruiser with a frigate. If he had any sort of tank at all you'd have trouble getting through it before dying.

Add "and the Cruiser pilot knows what he's doing" (which is not implied by "both are equally skilled"), and I'm still not convinced...
But replace "Cruiser" by "Thorax" and "Frigate" by "Rifter" and add the above phrase, then you are definitely right.

That depends whether she meant "has good skills on the character" or "is good at flying the ship." It's sometimes hard to tell whether people mean the former, the latter, or both. ;) ________________________________________________

Yea, it might've been dumb of me to take the offensive against a Cruiser. But the guy was stupid enough to wait an enormous amount of time before turning his web on. Skill points lose out to common sense most of the time.
But the main question still hasn't been addressed: Even in Cruiser vs Cruiser combat or anything really, do you usually shoot drones first or the ship?

Can you kill the enemy ship before the drones kill you?
If yes, ignore them. If no, kill them. ________________________________________________

Dont believe what some noobs will tell you, frigs can take anything in game with the right setup and playing off of the victims stupidity. Killing his drones was a good move, if you had T2 guns / rockets you could have minced him up nicely. I know I can take most noobs who underestimate my frigates...when it comes to some one who knows what they are doing, you have to be sharp and prepared to run like a dog...
Nice one mate!

TBH I think the guy was gauging how good you were - and when he got tired of seeing it and/r was done laughing (depending onthe circumstance :) he engaged web and swatted you - so to speak, of course :)
Not everyone goes gonzo balls-to-the-wall when they engage in PvP - some like to gauge their opponents first, to see what their caliber is. After all, it IS possible to pop a cruiser with a frigate - if the frigate pilot is well-skilled (both in terms of EvE skills and in the ol' wetware, where it counts) and ha some luck. Others, of course, like playing psych warfare (Oh look at that frigate firing at me! Isn't it KYOOT?) until they reach a certapin point when the joke's over, they whip out the gear and the BBQ happens :)

Depends onthe situation. If the drones were doing a Lot of DPS and/or he was using them instead of his guns, then popping them would help you last longer by reducing the DPS against you. As a general rule, though - and your tank can handle it - kill two birds with one stone by popping the CONTROLLER, then scooping the drones for extra profit.

Also, consider staying out of the 10k web range when flying something reliant on speed and sig radius for defence!

either way, if you stay out of web range, tackle the drones first, and have a scrambler on you, you'll have a really tough time breaking a rax's tank in a frigate. He's liable to just call in a friend or log in with an alt that is 15 jumps away just to swat you away if he can't land any hits on you hehe
Hell, he could probably create an alt and log in with a noob, buy a frigate, load it up, warp to you and then finally pop you in the time it takes.

Another thing to consider is that the 'rax does not get a bonus to drones. Most 'rax pilots rely on them though. Another thing is a lot of 'rax pilots fit a 800 or 1600 plate on the ship, which reduces the size guns they can use to small rails. At this point, you are just fighting a really beefed up frig but you are the one that is getting bonus to tracking, where as the 'rax is not (nor is he getting a bonus to the damage of his guns anymore as the Thorax gives bonus to Medium Hybrids only). There is also a chance that he could up his tracking by using small blasters, but at that point all you have to do is orbit outside of web range and you are good to go, since projectile use the fall off much better than hybrid or lasers. So there are many things to consider when taking on a Thorax, because they can have so many different setups. Personally, I don't think you made the wrong move, it is worth a shot imo, but that is the pirate in me talking. |

I would like to see a frig take down a properly tanked mission drake solo. Yes frigs have their uses, but unless your fighting someone totally inept at piloting their ship, your not going to beat a well tanked battleship with a frig for the simple reason that you cannot deal enough DPS.
