As the topic asks do you listen to music other than what is sung in a language you understand? If so what and why? Are the lyrics completely over your head so you just listen for the beat or do you get the gist of what is being said (either by the beat or any video that might be played with the music). -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
Players who post are like stars, there are bright ones and those who are dim.

Sometimes yeah, its refreshing to hear words being sung and not be bothered with potentially lame lyrics. However I do generally prefer my music void of vocals. _______

I listen to stuff ranging from Rammstein to The Polysics, I dont understand much (except when The Polysics singer tries to sing in Engrish). But for the most part, I dont try to understand the words, because they sound just as awesome with the music as they are.

Considering that in a lot of electronic music vocals are used purely as another instrument, and the lyrics are not important, I couldn't care less what language my electronic music is in. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

I listen to some metal that is sung in languages other then English and a few of those sing in tounges not native to their home country. I also listen to a good bit of Latin, Spanish, and Portugese music. I will look for or try to work out a rough translation if a song hits a nerve. With bands like Sepultura, when they sing in Potrtugese, I can get enough of a gist of the song to figure it out. All in all I listen to alot of music for the sound and lyrics are an excellent bonus if they are good.

If you are interested in this topic pick up the book This is your Brain on Music. It is not to technical but they are looking at the neuroscience behind music cognition. It does goes into how music can differ quite a bit in relation to where an individual is raised.

Yes, I realize that, just tried to be a smartass.
It seems very natural that your upbringing can affect your taste in music.

Death Metal Kareoke Sometimes it's supposed to be english...
More seriously though. Music where they sing in French, german, italian, latin, romanian etc have made it into my playlists. As have some indian music, but don't ask me to specify which language it is. I couldn't tell if it was hindi, Punjabi or Telugu (or any of the others) even if they weren't singing. The fact that they're singing it doesn't make it any easier (on occasion I can't even recognize my own language due to the singing style). ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. oftentimes it'll be Jpop/Jrock for me (none of the cutie cute songs from Japan).
I have to admit, most of the vocal trance that comes out of Japan is top-notch, and even better if they're basically melodic singing. -

Heh. I'm not that entranced by the J-whatever, but Aural Vampire has found a place in my heart. Quality Synthpop/electropop/darkwave ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

Yes, definately.
I don't listen to Lyrics like I used to. Nowadays it's just part of the music instead of something I actually pay attention to. So unless it's something short (and catchy) I couldn't care what language it's in, long as it sounds nice.

Yup, I have songs in German, Italian, French, Spanish, Finnish, and Japanese on my playlist, with several other languages used for individual lines here and there. Now, the vast majority of my songs are English, and the majority of my non-English are instrumentals, but there is a smattering of diversity there.
As for why, because it sounds cool. Go listen to Schwarze Sonne or Senzafine(jump ahead to about 2:00 on that video) and tell me that they're not worth keeping around. ------------------ Herschel's Lottery #1 - Win a Kronos! |
