I checked out the acronym's post and found no reference. What does "On Grid" mean? Seems to mean "in the same area of space as you" but how can you tell if you are on grid with someone?

If you can see them on the overview, they are on the same grid.

You can see them on your overview.
To explain what a grid is we have to look at how EVE is programmed. Many things in EVE are actually simplified; ships are spheres, planets are stationary etc. A solar system in EVE is divided into boxes that are (lets say) 1000 km long, wide and high. Only objects that are within the same box can interact with each other. There are exceptions to this, for example stargates and stations are visible from anywhere in the solar system.
At least this is how I have understood it. It may be very wrong.

That's pretty much it. Each solar system in EVE is a zone, and is divided into cubes, and only the stuff that's in the same cube that you're in is actually displayed to you. This is called being on the same grid as you.
If you move away from a station or stargate, it's possible to find the edge of the cube that it is in, and it will suddenly disappear from space and from the overview (along with everything in its vicinity). Fly back towards it, and it suddenly re-appears. Players on opposite sides of the grid edge will not see each other, even if they are 10 km from each other.
Obviously, if stuff disappears from overview and from view, you lose target lock, etc. Not many battles happen at the grid edge anymore, but it used to be more frequent.

On grid means it's on your overview - the actual distance varies.
Even at the same station, I can fly 400km one day and fly off the grid. The very next day I fly 1000km from the same station and I'm still on grid.
So there's no defintion of on grid with respect to a specific distance.

yea the grid is the current are of radar range from which your overveiw can perceive whoes around you, in 0.0 battles are won and lost depoending on who does and who does not have grid. if you warp ontop of an enemy fleet that is in posistion they will have grid and the lag they suffer will drastically be reduced compaired to the outragious lag you will suffer when you warp in.
the lag can be manipulated by useing effect modules like active sheild hardners boosters and sensor boosters which add to visual data in your current vicinity also deploying drones also adds to the effect of lag and loading time of the aproaching enemy fleet. the more crap you have in space and activated the more time your enemy will be lagged to death.
the lag is based mainly around large fleet engaugements and not so much small 5v5 engaugements the grid phelosophy will start to manifest its self when you exceed 10v10 fleets or more. the more in fleet the higher the lag so gaining grid in large fleet battles will determine the out come of the fight, gain grid and you will surely more than likely be the winner, ive seen m,uch much much smaller fleets destroy fleets almost 3 times their size purely because of lag issues created by gaining grid, it works like this if you have grid you have everything but your opponent loaded on your visual display meaning that all you have to do is load whats comeing at you and wait for lag to subside, the enemy on the other hand has to warp to you deploy drones activate modules load your activated modules and in this time frame it can take anything from a couple of important minutes to 15 minutes maybe more for the lag to subside and i think we can all agree that 15 minutes is plenty of time to do the attacking force an awefull lot of dmg before they finally get to shoot back.
its incredibly unfair and incredibly in the defenders favour it also ruins the fun of the game for surrounding systems too as people that are not in the war cannot fly round as they usually would as it can take ages to load each players grid some times it results in crashes, and if you crash dureing a fleet battle and trapped in a bubble your going absolutely no where untill you have been podkilled. :) hope this explains it for you.
