I passed my driving test today (yaaaaaay) but can't afford insurance (boooo). So im hoping that one of you lovely people (in the UK) will let me on your cheap insurance. I have a crappy little corsa, I can't promise I won't crash, but yeh. I'll pay the cost and probably throw in a navy mega or something. So if anybody wants to be stupidly kind, give me a bell suck me off |

since when can you let somebody ELSE on your insurance ? Isn't car insurance supposed to be CAR-specific, NOT driver-specific ? Is it just me or is the UK a bit wacky ?

best thing you can do is:
a: buy a new car (they all come with a years free insurance)[which is why there are soo many new/young drivers seen on the side of the road with a shiney pranged motor] b: ask your mum/dad to insure your car and add you as a second driver.
flog the car(you wont be able to afford the petrol in a few months time anyway) and get a bycycle

Well... as far as I know that ANY car insurance works....
1. an insurance is made on THE CAR, not the driver... 2. THE CAR will have at least one driver (being the owner), in case of a company owned car this would be the company and anyone from that company with a license can drive it (this last part is not sure) 3. You can put additional drivers for the car on the insurance, sometimes theres a limit or fee or increase in payment
Pretty simple so you would have to ask the owner/driver of the car you want to drive to be put on that cars insurance.

I kinda knew what I meant, like put my car on your policy, but whatever. Seeing as it can't be done or nobody wants to do it for me, anyone wanna help me find some car insurance providers that aren't gonna charge me 3 grand for a 1.2 corsa just cos im 17? I know there are some really obscure ones out there like national farmers union, im gna give them a try, but anybody got any other good ones? suck me off |

Of course you can, get yer ass over here, I'll chuck you my keys, and I know I'll be getting a new car very soon.
Not sure what you'll be in.
Buy an old banger and learn to drive now you've passed your test. Give it at least a year.
If you want a car as a minge magnet it ain't gonna happen now.

Some policies let you save quite a bit of money by stipulating that you are the sole driver of the vehicle. If the car is in an accident and you were not driving, you don't get anything.

In most countries the VEHICLE is insured and anyone with a valid license can drive it.
For those confused, insurance in the UK is driver AND vehicle specific. You insure a specific driver, to drive a specific vehicle. If the driver is old enough (past the 25 y/o threshold) depending on policy this may also entitle them to drive other vehicles with consent, with limited insurance cover (third party).
You can insure additional drivers to drive a vehicle as "named drivers", who can drive the vehicle with the same level of insurance cover as the main driver.
Also, unlike the US (afaik), insurance in the UK is mandatory, and driving without it lands you in VERY hot water, and generally leads to the governement turning your car into a 4x2 steel breeze block.

Having been caught twice without insurance I can tell you it's mandatory here too but far too many drive without it. The first time for me it was a good size fine and a slap on the wrist and the second time I received 10 days jail or 2 days SILD. I chose the SILD.
I know it can get your license suspended within time which in itself carries fines if your caught driving without one.
Kinda glad we don't get our cars turned into a block though.

How much are they asking for you to be insured in a Vauxhall Corsa? (What year/litre is that car anyway? '92 1.0L?)
I only ask because I bet you can get a lot more car for the same insurance.
I believe in V8s and only the V8s, so my first car (I passed in March this year btw) is a '96 Ford Mustang GT, 4.6L V8.
Insurance isn't as bad as you'd think for a left hand drive car with a decent sized engine in it.

For those of you not in the UK
his insurance is gonna be over ú800 third party fire and theft level of cover it would probably be over ú1400 fully comprehensive.
It also depends on where he lives, if hes in london, you might as well give up any hope of affording a car(bigger than a dinky model one)
basicaly he's 5crewed!
hit up admiral, esure, (AA and RAC are mickey mouse silly prices for everyone) there are others you could try, [direct line is looking for your blood(thats why the phone is red, they are vampires, they will suck your bank account dry)]
do not under any circumstances modify or change anything on your car, as you will simply double the cost of your insurance, K! even go faster stripes will jack up the price.
[[And never-ever change anything on the car without checking with the insurance company 1st!!!. if you modify or upgrade anything, they can and WILL refuse/cancel your cover, at any excuse, so if you pimped it, then had a prang, and the old bill came and had a look, they could ring your insurer, give them a update on the apparant spec of the car and the insurer could dump ur ass so fast the next thing you will find is the old bill are chucking u in the cells for not driving with valid insurance, and ur wheels are off to the crusher!!!]] Although you can get the policy to have exclusions added to it, like forget the wheels(alloys-locking wheel nuts are a must!)or lowered suspension(mind that speed hump thats looking to rip the guts out of your sump) or that fat drain pipe your mate replaced the exhaust with!. just depends on your cover, but you must declare everything...
it can allow you to have some bling on the car so you can pull (or live in the hope you might pull someone more attractive than the local OLD BILL in thier Evo late at night
Norwich Union do a special, where you can have tracking stuff fitted to your car, and you have a kerfew on using it after 10pm. sounds silly but it will help knock the price down.
oh and dont forget to get a aproved thatcham imobilsier and alarm fitted(by an approved garage!!!), it makes a difference when you got a grand to blow on insuring your wheels
best of luck
