With the latest patch we have yet another "tweak" to the NPC pirates. I know CCP is working hard on all aspects of the game to get the paramaters *just right* but the NPC's are p!ssing me off.
Before the latest patch we had Vexors firing missiles. Vexors don't have launchers.
Now we have Incursus firing missiles. Incursus don't have launchers.
WTF is going on? Where can I get versions of these UBER ships that only have 30MW of power but can belch never ending streams of missiles? Where?
One thing I have noticed with this latest patch you shrank the distance NPCs can lock on you. Back from the uber 45km now back to <20km. Thanks for that.

I've not had any Incursus frigs fire on me with missiles... if they are that's wack for sure. I agree.
With regards to the NPCs locking at closer range though, this is just a tactical combat addition as far as I'm concerned.
Example... Let's say you're mining in a heavy cargo cruiser and a pirate warps in. If he targets you right away, you'll know he's there... Thus, cruiser guns fire with mad range capabilities, ruining any chance for the pirate to make a dent in your shields.... immediately he is destroyed. He's in a frigate in most cases, probably armed with an Ion Blaster or two... He needs to get close without you spotting him if at all possible... So He should wait to target you until he is close. If you aren't paying attention, then he can get off a couple good shots before you can target him. I say this was a good move by CCP.
Don't depend on default auto-targeting (when they target you). If you don't want to have to pay attention, use the auto-targeting high slot item on your ship, and keep it active. That's what it's for. Albeit, I haven't found one that actually has good range.

Those are pirates. They don't have stock ships. If you think their ships are out of character, check the Amarr area, where there are Blood Engreavers. They use Crucifiers that shoot missiles. A Crucifier is an EW frigate with no launchers. Frankly, as pirates, their ships are not stock or standard issue. There are NPC ships that are not flyable as well, like the Police Entity frigate or the Sansha Minion/Scavanger/Servant/Raveners. though I'm not sure if the Sansha ships look like Atrons.

Yep, those Bloods knocked six bells out of me last night. Nasty buggers waited till I was up close too.
Can't complain though, I was blockade-running them and wondered why they were holding back. So I went for a closer look... ________________________________________________ Captain Bluebear Interstellar Vagrant |

you never know, later on we may get BP drops for these cool modified ships, it would make good use of the higher level ship command skills. ______________

In the recent dev chat, they stated that players with an apporpriate rating will get to buy pirate ships...or something like that.
I believe they give the pirate ships familiar icons which you will recognize so you have an estimate of "about" the level of that pirate.
Would you go charging into a belt full of pirates you knew nothing about?

Maybe the pirates modified the ships with their special insert-missile-launcher-slot machine? ;)
Seriously, that could be possible as an "explination"
