Originally by: Oberoonmoon With custom logos on ship, you will get a very laggy server. Just think of Jita with maybe 30 different alliance members there, and hundreds of corps and you need to upload every new logo from the server to see them all (will happen automatically). Add to the math that hundreds of pilots need to upload this as well. Talk about lagdeath.
This. It would be neat if they didn't have to worry about lag, but lag is about a million times more importaint then a little bit of customization atm.
Click one character portait and notice that it takes a couple seconds to download even just for yourself and even then the image is generated on your computer with a few key "ingrediants" being passed to you. Now imagine this for 30 alliances in the game but the actual, larger, image files. Now multiply that for all of 300 people on the server. Not practical.
P.S. "It's just another texture" is lol. All the textures for ships, only about 200, are stored on your hard drive and already take up a good chunk of the size of EVE.
So they could just pre-load alliance logos unto your computer, since they only update them after every patch. Notice it doesn't lag you AFTER you have the portrait. _

Note what i said. There are 200 ships and they already take up a good chunk of your hard drive. Now imagine having to download all the alliances to your hard drive. That would be the equivilent of downloading the whole of EVE 2-3 more times. Not to mention the lack of hard drive space or the people who quite frankly don't care about looking pretty.
Gameplay > Graphics. Especially for those of us that play the classic client with everything sent to minimum to make the game run much better. _______________

I rather see stripes instead, logos can add more lag especially when they are custom allaince ones.

PRE-LOAD with a PATCH. This means that you would ALREADY have the LOGOS on your HARD DRIVE after a patch and all your computer has to do is PULL the graphic out of your EVE FOLDER. There's no need for this to be server side. [Network] Lag is not created by graphics, the game doesn't lag because there are 300 people in 300 different ships at 300 different speeds in 300 different directions, Eve lags because there are 300 people period, they could all be in the same ship, at the same speed, going in the same direction, and it wouldn't make a difference. _
