Is there anything else besides VLC that can play these? I have a few I've downloaded that used to work fine, but for some reason, now the audio sounds weird. I just want to see if it's the video, or VLC.

You COULD just type "mkv player" into your favourite search engine.
Or mkv codec if you're feeling ballsy.

I could, but I've wasted too much time in the past on similar problems only to download complete garbage. I'd rather get something I know is going to work.

I use GOM player. Pretty much the only thing I don't use the built0in codecs for are ac3 audio (I use ac3-filter) and h.264 (I use coreavc).
If it's just audio that's buggered, you can try setting VLC to use an external filter like ac3 filter.

You may wanna change your audio option on the VLC window.
Try going to AUDIO---> audio device ( change between the two )
