I have recently made some very big profits in game by cornering the market of a certain item. I had region wide buy orders offering top market price and I scooped up the whole supply. Then I slowly sold it all off at inflated prices using a clever (but not illegal) method of making the actual market price seem higher.
CCP have obviously seen this and are now trying to control the market price themsleves.á Three times nowáI have but in region-wide buy orders at the highest price and they have come in with an offer for 50,000 units at a higher price, forcing me to raise mine.á Each time I have raised my price, they have again raised theirs. It is fully out of order how they stop prices running naturally.á
Basically, there is no free market in this game.á CCP can, and do when they feel like it, control the price of everything.á There is no economics of the game driving this massive purchase, since there is no actual in game demand this large, only the cynicism of a gamesmaster.
Buy putting in artificially inflated buy or sell orders for large numbers of items CCP can control it all.
Has anyone else experienced this?

One easy way to find out who it is outbidding your buy orders, sell some of the stuff and look at your transactions log in your wallet. I'll bet it's another player though, always has been when it's happened to me.

I will make a sale to find out who it is, but there is no way it is another player or for an ingame demand. If it is, they have a buy order in for 50,000 units, or about a half billion's worth of stuff. I'm all for competition, but that is just not realistic.

definetly another player
even though the buy order is for 50.000 units that by no means means he expects to get it all
hell if all my buy orders went through right now I would be in a few hundred millions minus

I have buy orders on the market ranging close to a billion all together. Im not all that worried that they get filled all at once. There is always competition on the market. If you got a ton of isk you can afford to squeeze the competition out and then later stabilize the market again.

Sell him all 50k at once, he will be screwed, MARKET FINE hahaha. How high is a market fine anyway? And first you should find out who it is,too. |

Edited by: MrJordanIOI on 25/06/2004 14:52:27 Nice info Please keep us updated on the outcome and DO verify if its a real player.
If you are indeed right with your GM assumption then CCP will want to answer a few questions to us. In case you miracolously vanish, maybe even more so..
Only problem is a GM can maybe be a real player with some "extra" cash too..

In the market of construction components it's usual to get overbid 2,3 or even more times/day. How frequently do you check your orders?
If that was the "item" (ooh seeeecret :P), then there's a chance that person was me
The stable 50k implies a bidding signature, if he bids from the same station, then it's almost definitely a player (and not a careful one, if the item costs 10k then he probably can't cover the cost).
Don't worry, at least be happy you got to make the pretty isk before others jumped in the game. Either use your experience and isk to take over that part of the market, or try to find a new hot item to jump to before others do. Once you make the first big isk, then it's the easy road...

There are times you CAN corner the market.
When I was in JF, we founf a certain story-related commodity and traded it, and apparently VERY few others caught on. I made 800 mil in a week, others made more.

Sort of but mine doesn't count. On the first day the fines were added to chaos they were 100% fines. I put up 5 billion isk in buy orders. Later that day BH Eight sold me the whole load of which I couldn't pay for and I was 5 billion isk in debt.
