Would you make first contact at day or at night?
I would go for night, as my pretty ship lights would wow the locals much more, and a dark shape in sky during the day is way too scary (see Independance Day).
Now before you reply, your a friendly alien not an evil alien.
Think Jean Luc Picard more than Galactus.

Edited by: goodby4u on 14/10/2008 16:31:44 Depends, if I had heavy defences then I would do it during the day, ensure the governments hear about the ordeal and launch all nukes, once they are all ineffective i'll then open up on everything.
Oh wait friendly? Then I would come in cloaked, walk up to some leaders with heavy shielding and my beam up button at the ready and then I would tell them that im from another planet blah blah.

This is exactly the problem with the human race, we think we are so special! We are so grand and important that an interstellar civilization would even want to talk to us!
Just because we had technological breakthroughs the last 100 years, doesn't mean we are important. Let me ask you something, when was the last time you stopped by and said hi to a nest of ants living in your backyard? The answer is never, you ignore them. But if they start coming inside your house, you wouldn't even think wise about going outside and killing them.
And that's exactly the kind of a difference between out human civilization and an interstellar race.
Oh and if you don't think so, well think about this. WE are still burning dead plans for fuel to make our technology work! Just like we did 1000 years ago, the only difference is now we have better technology with which to fight/heal/communicate.

Not exactly, I for instance talk to animals sometimes, but I do understand they probably(more like definately)dont understand me.... Aliens however probably could learn our language and communicate with us.
On the subject of tech, tech devlopement is always slow, the new tech helps the old tech along and once we find a better way the old tech is replaced by new tech, its a process.... Sure the uber aliens of doom would probably kick our asses, but we have great potential as a people as the tech we're devloping is advancing EXPONENTIALLY.
Lastly, when it comes to weapons the reason we're still using kinetic weapons is because its simple, affective, and reliable.

I think the OP has dangerously unrealistic expectations of intelligent life elsewhere.
Think about it; what would happen were Earth to develop useable interstellar travel?
Would we be blipping about the universe helping out other, less technologically, advanced races with a view to galactic peace.... or would we end up as a gang of interstellar pirates, plundering weaker civilisations for the betterment of the First Great & Bountiful Human Empire.
I know which I think is more likely given the attitude of human governments to their own populace, let alone what their attitude might be to intelligent races with a different number of limbs (and green slimy skin, with all warts on it or fake looking fur and scales and stuff... probably).
Why assume that ILE is going to be any more altruistic than humans would be?
Even if the ET's are morally a step above us, would it not make sense for them to stay the feck away from the Earth? Even if we aren't dangerous to them (yet), the merest hint of a technological leg-up from them, and we'd be secretly manafacturing death-rays and proton-cannons to use against our new benefactors, whilst smiling insincerely at them and rattling off platitudes about a new era of peace and mutual exploration.
I for one feel a great deal of sympathy for our prospective new alien overlords.

Considering the size of the universe and just the sheer number of stars (it's astronomical LAWLPUN) the probability of there NOT being intelligent spacefaring life SOMEWHERE in the universe is impossibly tiny.
1. There is intelligent life out there. 2. If it works on anything like the principles of evolution that we see on Earth it WON'T be friendly. 3. If I was malevolent alien life I would just use biological weapon to wipe out all the hoomans. Don't bother with invasion too much effort considering the alternatives. 4. First contact would be me stepping on your withered skeletons.

The trick with an interstellar civilization is that it would be extremely hard for it to be in our cosmological backyard, because we would have detected some sort of frequencies from them. Radio, etc...

I'd make contact in day as it has that "you can freaking see me in clear freaking view and you have to accept me", whereas in the night you can say it was a balloon, helicopter, gas, birds, planes, stars, planets, satellites, comets, witches, hallucinations etc.
If you're a friendly alien you'd probably expel certain pheromones or something so that people chill out and generally don't go mad and kill each other and go mental.
Jean luc picard, peh!, star trek NG was pretty much Christians/hippies in space imho.

Having watched human's outgoing tv programs and documentaries, I'd know humans would never be actually friendly with me. They'd string me along until they could beat me, then kill me and take my stuff. Knowing this, I'd make sure I killed them all; quickly, without pain or misery, but exceedingly efficiently.
When faced with the pernicious truth about humanity, that's about as 'friendly' I can be unless I wish to offer myself up as a sacrifice.

If friendly I make first contact via radio. That way no matter how angry the humans are at me, I'm far enough away that they don't have anything that can touch me.
Then I negotiate a landing time and location that please everyone.
If I'm hostile then 'first contact' will be a large asteroid slamming into the earth. Then I start broadcasting from a safe distance.

Most of us can't even stand our own politics. What makes you think aliens would have ANYTHING to do with us at all?
I guarantee if there are any intelligent life forms out there watching us the very minute we gained interstellar travel they'd tell us to stay in our own solar system or die. That or just implode our star causing a massive black hole to suck every last planet in the Sol system into itself without making any contact at all.
Humans are incredibly dangerous creatures. --- My cat Putter approves of this post. |

Thats assuming evolution is different on other planets, which is somewhat fallacy due to an animals need to feed off other animals or plants.
And if its because they are evolved to a point where they are pacifists then would we not get there aswell?

Actually this is quite an exciting time if we keep up space travel, because these are our years of us making the toddling steps into our solarsystem.
Any race interested in their own history would probably be wanting to watch us, because if evolution works the same there as here then their history wouldve probably been much like our own.
