As the title says I have a Q about jumpdrives, Jump freighters in particular.
Ive been playing the game for 10 months now and am thinking of purchasing a Jump Freighter and I confess that I know absolutly nothing about Jumpdrives , I would like to know the following:
1. Can jump drives be used in h-i-sec, from say one system in hi-sec to another?
2. Jump drives use fuel, but does the amount used affect the distance jumped?
3. How does jumping work, do i just click and jump or is it a little more complicated than that?
Well thanks in advance for anything you can help me with, also general advice on their use would be great. -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Kalii Parcon on 15/10/2008 16:41:53 1) Jump drives could theoretically be used from any space to any space, however you must have someone to open a Cyno field wherever you are jumping to. Cyno field are not allowed in hi-sec systems (.5+), therefor you cannot jump from high security to high security systems. You can, however, jump from hi-sec system to low-sec/null-sec systems. Also, jump freighters as well as regular freighters can use stargates, unlike all other capital ships.
2) Jump drives use fuel, yes. The distance that you jump and your jump-related skills affect this. Jump drive operation reduces the capacitor requirement for jumps, jump drive calibration affects how FAR you can jump, and jump fuel conservation reduces the fuel required to make that jump. A good tool can be found here: http://www.eve-icsc.com/jumptools/jumpplanner.php This takes your skills, a start point and where you want to go and gives you a very accurate estimate as to how much and how far you can go etc. It is not 100% all the time, but very very close.
3) Jump drives work pretty much as easily as you said. You form a gang with the person that will be opening the Cyno field wherever your destination is. They open the field, you can then 'Jump To' that person.
Hope that helps.

1. No, however black ops and jump freighters can jump from High sec into low or null sec.
2. Yes
3. First you join a gang with someone (an alt or trusted other) that has the ability to open a Cynosural Field. Once in gang, have that alt or someone activate the Cynosural Field Generator, then right click their name and "Jump to <Star Sysyem Name Here>".
Alternatively some 0.0 controlling entities have cyno generators anchored at pos's which act as a cyno beacon for any sufficiently privileged pilot. ------------------- |

Jump drives can be used to jump out of hi sec into low sec or 0.0. Cannot open a cyno in hi sec so ya cannot jump into high sec.
Jump freighters have a special ability where they can use both normal gates as well as jump drives. This allows a jf to jump into low sec, then use a gate to enter hisec. Most ships with a jump drive cannot use normal gates (with black ops as another exception).
The fuel consumption listed is per light year. So say 1000 units of fuel used (carrier, no skills). And going 8 light years. So 8000 units of fuel required. So the longer distance (in lightyears), the more fuel consumed. Caps have a limited range in how far they can jump.
Pop a cyno with an alt. Usually something disposable, and usually outside of a station with a nice docking range. Be in gang. Broadcast the cyno, or right the gang member, jump to. 30 sec or so session timer. you'll magically end up next to the cyno.
Most of the rest is technique on how to not get ganked while moving around a big slow target. Mostly choice of station to cyno to. Recognize a bump. How to tell you're desynched and drifting 100km from docking while the client says you're at zero. How to scout the gates. Don't carry so much expensive stuff that it begs for a hi sec suicide gank.
