i'd like to see how your pistol stands up to their guys with mg3s (modern mg42 that'll cut you in half) and all other that other equipment they have.
For added fun, NATO is committed to the defense of Iceland. I think NATO outguns a guy with a pistol quite handidly.

Total BS.
Anyone who knows anything about Icelandic history will know that they have been on the brink of starvation for most of their history. Let's face it, Iceland isn't a land of milk and honey; you can't grow that many useful crops in such a high latitude. Icelanders(?) have survived for centuries by eating whatever was available to them, just look at some of their dishes: rotten shark anyone?
Iceland is a nation of survivors. They'll do what's necessary to survive, and have done for most of their existence. So even if they really had five weeks of food, all they'd need to do is consult their family cookbook to learn what is edible, and what isn't, unless certain preparatory steps are taken. So, yeah, they're gonna be fine. I wouldn't be surprised if one semi-modern fishing boat could supply a good deal of the population with enough to eat, considering that they relied on pre-industrial boats with no gadgets or doohickeys for centuries. |

Awesome thread. Best in weeks, brought me out of the woodwork to respond.
Couplea thoughts:
Originally by: Roushi For the purpose of this thread we shall the Iceanders as The Jove (it's the home of the devs) and anyway, I thought the Jove were fonder of beer than food?
Great point. Alcohol has a lot of calories, and beer in particular has b vitamins and fibre as well so they're all set.
But really F'nog makes the best points.

Iceland is a nation of survivors. They'll do what's necessary to survive, and [start raiding the rest of Europe for food, alcohol, gold, and women again.].
I may be paraphrasing that last part, but I think the point is well made.

Edited by: Avernus on 16/10/2008 05:41:26 5 weeks is a heck of a lot. For most major urban centers in North America, standard practice is just-in-time distribution, and they have considerably lower stocks than that available.

Question, why the hell are people so up in arms about this?
Probably because it was widely heralded as a feature of the game for over 5 years. Now, suddenly, it's a bug. Clearly Oveur needs to pay a visit to CCP and knock some sense into the new devs. But I'm not actually for or against this, I just like consistency from the developers. This clearly isn't.
But I don't want to derail the thread, so I'll stop.

It's quite possible (indeed likely given the modern trend for "just in time logistics") that the US did and still does only have a month's worth of wheat in reserve.
However, as wheat is taken from that supply, new wheat is bought in to replace it.

I'm totally joining their police force, can I still get a MORNINGSTAR?? Sure they aren't standard anymore, but... we get sad silly little sticks in the States. ( Along with my pistol, taser, pepper spray, and riot shotgun). I had to quit, since we weren't allowed to use them anymore, and the citizens complained about it, *excessive* I think the captain said...

I'm quite sure it's true, but it's based on the possibility that all wheat fields are somehow, suddenly destroyed, or rendered inhospitable. So, yeah, if suddenly there was no more food to be harvested/acquired, then any country would be in trouble. But if that were to happen, there'd probably be bigger concerns, like nuclear winter, giant alien motherships, a comet impact, a mega volcano, etc. Plus most of the population would probably be dead, so the time frame would have to be adjusted upwards.

clearly, this article is incorrect.
Iceland has 5 weeks of food left... for other nations.
however, with approximately 48million gallons of alcohol (oveur's personal stash), and a large number of uneaten cow's heads in storage, the icelanders are perfectly fine.

hehe if this were true, I'd be very worried about going to any CCP event... particularly one where they fed you and gave you beer... kinda reminds me of that casino in the original Battlestar Galactica...
Seriously, I doubt this is true... they probably have as many fishing vessels as the UK does now, after all our cutbacks, and none of the euro-bull to limit their catches.
Of course, you might all be sick of fish by the time the ISK rebounds, but hey...
