When I start eve, either with cedega or with wine, I have both installed since this issue came up, i see a black screen. I believe it has to do with some upgrades to Ubuntu that I installed yesterday. The issue is the same with cedega or with the wine installation. I start the client and it gives me the splash screen, It then takes up the right resolution (full-screen 1600x1200) but then its just black with no login screen. If I hit escape I can get to the settings page but none of the buttons work and I can't change the resolution or anything. I have done this from the cedega settings so I can change resolution for the game but to no avail. Anyone experiencing the same thing? The upgrades included a kernel upgrade so I had to redo the nvidia driver (177.80) which was working fine before this upgrade. I can provide exactly what was upgraded if needs be or anything else.
I will try a rollback to the previous version of wine, but I thought cedega was using its own version and not the one installed in ubuntu but I am new to this s/w, not linux though.
Regards,
Sean

Might have a related problem - after the latest Ubuntu update (update to kernel 2.6.24-21-generic and nvidia-glx-new to 169.12+2.6.24-21.51) eve stopped behaving both with the stock wine and 1.1.6.
Ever since, EvE stops loading after the "Empyrian Age" Splash Loading screen is displayed - using the wine /desktop=x.x workaround. Console output of wine (the unusual bit) reads:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x7e199330 (thread 0019), starting debugger...
Complete wine console output can be found at http://pastebin.com/m244f026b
If I start wine without using that fix, eve freezes my x session and I have to kill it manually via console
glxinfo output: http://pastebin.com/m548543f0
It would be very kind if someone could offer some insight. If more info is needed, just ask. |

Just in case: If you have installed nvidia drivers from the nvidia page, everytime you update a package with the name linux you must reinstall the drivers. I'm not really sure what the envy package does, but you used that, you might want use it to reinstall the driver again. -- Wine + fix |

I ended up uninstalling the wine 1.1.6 package from Ubuntu, compiling and installing wine 1.0, installing a missing font and then everything seemed to be working fine. I compiled 1.1.6 after that and am also able to run wine fine now. Not sure what the exact problem was but doing what I did worked. re-installing the packages also might have worked I might try that when I am don't want to play.

Installing DirectX did the trick. :)
Go to wineprogramdir/CCP/EVE/bin/DirectX and do wine DXSETUP.exe. click through and EVE should work.
(compiled wine 1.1.6)
