I have been playing EVE for a number of years and it's been fun, for the most part, untill recently. I have been slowly getting more and more angry by all of the incessive nerfs in order to achive the mythical "Balance" that everyone seems to dream of. It is a fantasy that does not exist anywhere in any universe real or imagined.
So why is it that EVE should be some kind of exception? Almost every single mod and ship that I can use...(and that's most of them) has been nerfed...usually just after I train them. Alot of them have been nerfed more than once. Why you may ask?
Because somewhere, sometime a n00b got beat by one of them and screamed his head off untill the devs stepped in and helped him out with a nerf. With no reguard to the people who spent many long hours training and sometimes alot of ISK playing the game the fair and honest way to achive a higher level of skill.
They did not cry to devs to help them. They did not cry that it was not fair when they got beaten down by older players. They accepted the fact and worked to get better at the game. Now tell me...Is that not how EVE was ment to be played? So why is it that the devs are so willing to help a newer player skip all the work and nerf the older players, in effect helping him cheat his way to victory?
Because what you call "Balance", I call a shortcut. The whole point of training is to get stronger and gain skills and experience. By giving the advantage to a newer player you aren't helping him learn how to play. What you are teaching him is that if he screams loud enough all his problems are solved with a wave of a wand.
That is not a reasonable expectation. You have just deprived him of the learning proccess and now you have to nerf a bunch of other things to try and restore the "Balance" you just ruined all to make a few newer players happy. Meanwhile you have upset all the older players and made all thier work pointless and all thier mods/ship usless or at least less effective. Where is the "Balance" in that? These are the players that helped shaped EVE in the first place and shown thier love of the game with real time and real money.
So before you reach for that nerf, stop a moment and think. Are you really helping the game? Are you really helping that new player? Is it totally impossible for the game to work the way it is now? Is it worth slapping the older players in the face for all thier effort, time, and money to bring out this nerf because a few newer players are unhappy?

WALL OF TEXT! I only made it to the second paragraph - but I support this man because I have yet to experience a patch/nerf that helped me in any way.

Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 17/10/2008 11:52:36 the problem is that some guy, somewhere, long time ago said "nerf" instead of "change".
Unless you complain about each and every change in-game to each and every issue, you have no leg to stand o*falls over* ow...
