Edited by: valkir on 03/07/2004 10:14:40 with the up coming shiva patch and the ability to fly npc pirate ships i wonder if there will be a way to steal them.
be it a sansha frigate a angle cruser or a gurista battleship it would be exciteing a adrenilin rush to go out a steal a npc pirate ship and be able to float around in it.
it would also be a alternative to mineing if you could recycle them fun and profit all in 1 shot.
by npc pirate ships i mean only npc ships

Being able to steal a ship or cargo (Apart from emptying out a corp hangar) would be awsome. It would actually allow some "real" piracy. ---------------------------

Now that was what i was thinking...
A skill that allowed the use of marine boarding vessels fired from a hardpoint on your ship.
Then you could have a friend jump in, with a frigate and board the Cruiser/Battleship/Ship you just captured and fly back to a station with it. Then you could leave behind a container of the NPC Pirate crew for someone to find!
It would work like the marines in Homeworld 2 or (for anyone who has played Halo)the Covenant Boarding Craft.
It would be fun to capture a named rat's ship and leave his corpse in space behind you...
"Here lies the fearsome pirate Sangrel Minn, who after suffering defeat was left in this container as punishment for his crimes. Unfortunately no ship reached him in time..."
All of this could be controlled by the skill "Marines" and maybe sub skills like "Boarding" and "Efficient Capturing" which would make the marines more strong and better at maintaining the captured vessels.
Then the Marines would have to be bought from the market or hired from Escrow...

Edited by: Sarf on 05/08/2004 04:12:29 I was thinking a new kind of frigate. A marine bording ship, it has a special menu option for when you are within 1500m +500m per level of Ship bording skill.
When you are this close you trigger the boarding and your ship rams the pirate and you get a little display of you trying to attack the ship. damage to the ship and your skill determins if you succsed or not.
if you win you gain controll of the ship, if you fail you are left in space as a corpse. Yes you die if you lose, takeing over a ship, especily a pirate ship would be a life or death task.
AKA pirates don't take prisoners. they space you.

how would you get the crew to not kill you once on board? And what about auto-self destructs?
doesn't seem like it'll happen

Heres my suggestion for capturing NPC ships. Take a page from Mechwarrior and their idea of critical shots. The idea being once you get to structural damage you run into the possiblity (say 5%) that you will get a critical shot against the*****pit which either kills the NPC crew or forces a PC pod to eject. You then bookmark the position, to comeback for the ship in your pod, or risk your current ship by ejecting and boarding as per usual.
I would suggest the following skill to gunnery, "Critical Systems Targeting" or "sniper" which gives you a increased chance to get that crit (but no more than 20%) Also size of the turret should come in to play as well. as a small turret would be more likely to hit the crit as it does less damage and therefore allows more shots ie chances to hit. A nice addition would be an option on the gun controls to take a "aimed" shot increasing your abiltiy based on skill, but also increasing firing time. (ie aiming takes 10x times longer to shoot) all based on skill levels.
Im undecided about ship classes and capture abiltiy, in theory a battleship would be easier to capture as they have more Structural HPs and therefore more chances to get a crit shot.
