I am a bit confused about lasers and their named counterpart. I'll write up how I think it is and I'd like confirmation from people that know if I got it right or wrong.
Frigate:
Small + Medium Beam/Pulse
Cruiser:
Medium + Heavy Beam/Pulse
Battleship:
Mega + Tachyon Beam/Pulse
They all have Dual such as Dual Mega Pulse, Dual Heavy Beam etc.
Then there is the named lases. Afocal, Maser, Modulated. Problem is there don't seem to be any real "connection" between them. Railguns seem to be "logical" in that they go 'Scout', Carabide, Compressed and Prototype. But I don't seem able to make that connection with the lasers
Any laser experts able to help me out. Do lasers have a logical order like Railguns. Thus you might have
Afocal Mega Beam Laser, Afocal Mega Pulse Laser etc. Also, I think Modulated is best but am not entirely sure.

These are the available turrets:
Small
Gatling Pulse Laser
Dual Light Pulse Laser
Dual Light Beam Laser
Medium Pulse Laser
Medium Beam Laser

Quad Light Pulse Laser
Focused Medium Pulse Laser
Focused Medium Beam Laser
Heavy Pulse Laser
Heavy Beam Laser
Large
Dual Heavy Pulse Laser
Dual Heavy Beam Laser
Mega Pulse Laser
Mega Beam Laser
Tachyon Beam Laser
They also have meta-names in following order (from worst to best):
Afocal
Modal
Anode
Modulated

I guess you just have to look at the first part of the named laser to tell how good it is. I think I've seen an Afocal Maser something. Since it's Afocal first it's the worst named type. Makes a bit more sense now.

The problems with named lasers, they changed some of the named Beams to Masers and stuff like that :-/ A lot of the named stuff isn't quite as cut and dried as best/worst either, some use less cap, or less CPU as well.
The easiest way to tell is the letter in the bottom right of the icon, S for small, M for medium, L for large.
The best names guns also do about 20% more damage than the stock type, so its worth trying to collect a set.

I wouldn't mind testing a Dual Mega Pulse for a change Too bad Mr.Pulse hasn't invented one yet.

Look at the grid req. It goes like:
minimum for low range, fast tracking (like electron blaster)
maximum for long range, big guns (like big rail)
In the middle you have:
- one "dual" which is bad tracking short range easy to fit (like dual rails)
- one almost as big grid as big long range, that will be short range big damage, like neutron blasters.
And so on. Forget the names - look at fitting, its like a mirror of hybrids, ladder-wise.
