First time flying a Caracal for PvP, looking to get some input on this:

I can use a LSE II but I have to ditch the AB. Looking for comments, tweaks, etc.. I cannot fit T2 HAM's yet and even then grid is tight.

Edited by: Jhagiti Tyran on 20/10/2008 21:30:20 There is no real solid reason a HAM Caracal would not work but IMO the paper thin buffer you can squeeze on is not really sufficient for up close up fighting, even with decent skills you don't get much range with HAMs on the Caracal and the ship is not really suited to being in up front slugfests.
The Caracal is good at two things, standard assault missile launchers for dealing with frigate sized ships and longer range fire support with heavy missiles and the first option is really good with T2 precision light missiles, both of these fittings should include sensor boosters two ballistic controls along with as much EHP as you can fit and possibly a MWD/AB.
Try the HAM version but it will probably end badly.

Err... Honestly it's not a very good close range ship. But if you are adamant about using HAMs, then swap the DCU for an RCU so you can fit a MWD and/or LSE.
Also, putting rigs on a Crapacal is not terribly cost effective. It is the epitome of expendable ships. The quintessential glass-cannon, if you will. The thing drops in seconds even with an LSE+MSE+Invuln. It's best tank is usually range. If you absolutely have to waste ISK on your piece of shit T1 cruiser, then use missile damage or range rigs.
My suggestion is go with a standard cookie-cutter HML Crapacal. If you want to use HAMs, get a Drake. Much better HAM platform.

Yeah, this setup looks like it's trying to be one too many things given the Caracal's limited fittings.
If you want the DPS of HAMs, I'd drop the DCU and fit another BCU, and drop the AB for as much buffer as you can fit.
If you want speed, I'd go flat out nano and fit either HMLs or AMLs with jammers and cap boosters. "This is not the boot you're looking for." |

I ran a setup like that a long, long time ago. Its damage is pretty nice for a caldari T1 cruiser actually, and it has "enough" buffer. Chose your targets and use your range to your advantage over closer range ships. Proper target selection is pretty much mandatory w/o backup on speedial. Don't be under any illusions though: its a glass jaw of a fit, and if your not jumping into or landing on your target, you probably are going to lose.
I would never take it into nullsec, and only roam lowsec w/ it if you know what your doing.
For gang support, ASM II w/ precision for anti-frigate or HML + buffer/ECCM are better options.

I have flown a Caracal in PvP, I flew in close, and got killed. The Moa however is better for close range for teh caldari cruisers. a Caracal HML setup with Ballistics and MWD to keep range, and as much buffer as you can sport is a better selection.
If you go wit AB you can fit an LSE as well:

Replace for T1 if low on skill or isk. Its a cheap gang ship, not good for solo at all. It gotta keep range and let somebody tackl and get up close to the target.

Somewhat of a skill heavy fit but accually has a nice buffer.
5x Assault missile launcher II
3x LSE II 1x Magnetic Scattering Photon field II 1x Invul field II
2x Spr II
1x Hydraulic bay thruster 1x exp velocity rig (can't recall the name off my head)
Good for hitting the small fast stuff and with the buffer of about 11.5k it's like the spanish inquisition...noone expects it.

Well theres another thread on this atm but tbh I can't see thats its really cost effective to rig a tech 1 cruiser.
Also, I just jammed this into EFT and it simply wont cut it, 200 dps and a 12k ehp buffer wont get you anywhere.
Tbh that looks like a well fitted destroyer's stats.

Alright the point of this setup is to do basic tackle and get someone used to the role, with an eye towards eventually moving up to an Onyx. It is designed with lower skill (<10m) pilots in mind who may only have a few lvl 5 skills in things like Electronics or Engineering (core).
Did I mention it is 'cheap'.

Not great dps but all round nice gang support. Reason for adding some speed is medium drones, although range is main tank.
If going solo you could replace 2 tracking disrupters with a web and scram but I think it would not be as effective. In any event - it's still fast enough not to worry about medium drones if you go in fairly close. Webs would kill drones off quick also or pesky intys that try to web you. Your main targets would be plated cruisers.
