Setting up the overview right is just too hard So I decided to make default "correct" (quotes intended) overview settings available
You can download it here It's an xml file compressed into a rar file. Any decent unzipper should be able to unpack it, otherwise download WinRAR
Copy this xml file into your C:\Users\username\Documents\EVE\Overview directory (location will vary by OS. If you can't find it, export your overview settings to a distinct file name like 'WTF_where_is_the_dir' and search your machine for that filename). If there is no 'Overview' directory in \Documents\Eve just create it.
Then you can import this xml file into EVE by clicking the little triangle at the top left of your overview window and selecting import overview settings (this is also where you export them).
Now don't mess with it any more unless you know WTF you're doing
What will you have ? An overview with 5 tabs. In EVE you want to only see what you need to see at any time. Seeing more causes lag and makes your life harder, usually resulting in a little trip with the pod express.
- Default tab will have the select all filter for overview and bracket profile. If you can't find or see something select this tab.
- Travel tab will have the travel no ships filter for overview and travel all no ships for bracket profile. If you select this you will not see any ships in the overview or in space, just gates, planets, stations and the sun. The screen will show brackets for planets, asteroid belts, gates and stations. It should show moons, but it doesn't. This is a feature instead of a bug I believe.
This is used for traveling through highsec or for making a quick exit when you're in trouble. Basically, it's your GTFO button.
- Battle tab will have the battle filter for overview and the battle all filter for bracket profile. If you select this you will only see hostiles and neutrals on your overview and in space. You will also see all ships and drones in space. In addition, you will see stargates, station, the sun and most other celestial objects in both.
In battle, you do NOT want to see friendlies on your overview as it doubles your lag and might easily cause friendly fire. If you're in a big battle you will want to turn all the brackets off beforehand. You can do this by selecting hide all brackets in the overview settings menu.
- Drones tab will will have the battle drones filter for overview and the battle drones all filter for bracket profile. If you select this you will see only hostile and neutral drones in the overview and in space.
This is a separate tab as drones cause a huge amount of lag and often being able to kill the enemy's drones is the difference between winning or losing. Again, if you expect a big battle, hide all brackets first.
- General tab. Here you can use a filter of choice. A good choice would be the friendly ships filters which only shows friendly ships. But you can also use a salvage or mining filter for example.
General filter rules :
- Filters will usually show anything (stations, gates, sov structures) that will not clutter up the screen (like drones). This is for ease of navigation and maneuvering.
- The bracket filters will usually show most other things as well to prevent accidental decloaking.
- Charge(s) (bombs and probes) will always be shown in all filters.
Okay, after importing the standard settings, check all these tabs. They must correspond exactly with the pictures (click links for pictures). In the tabs where you can move stuff up and down the correct order is vital !

IMPORTANT !
These settings are intended for an 0.0 alliance pilot's life where everyone who is not blue is considered hostile. If you're flying in highsec many people will be red, orange or yellow. Do NOT shoot at them in highsec or Concord will kill you. Shoot at them in lowsec and 0.0
Always make sure that the right edge line of the last column of your overview is visible inside the overview grid so the EWAR icons will not be shown 'off screen'.
Special note to Faction War players There are FW filters included but you will have to add the militia column yourself after importing. Take a loo... FIRE FRIENDSHIP TORPEDOES ! Louis's epic skill guide v1.1 |

Current status : Settings have been updated for Crucible expansion dd. 31-03-2012
Major changes since the Incursion version : - Every filter now has POS towers and Jump Bridges - Lots more POS filters (scout, POS assault, etc) - Minor tweaks - Some filters merged and others added
Know defects : Various filters will show sentry turrets unintended. On the TODO list.
Special thanks to Joe Starbreaker, Dex Timor, SerratedX, Aegyen See, Venna Lealis for feedback and Spc One for testing
Know defects caused by CCP : Since Incursion, it is not longer possible to make a blues-only filter without adding all 'no standing' people as well. So friendly ships and drones will show 'no standing' as well. This totally blows for logistics people but I can't find a solution. I submitted a bugreport (106977) about this dd. 2011.01.30. The defect is known but not fixed as far as I know. FIRE FRIENDSHIP TORPEDOES ! Louis's epic skill guide v1.1 |

If you set it up exactly as instructed, the 'general' tab. The 'default' tab will show everything. Any overview tab can show it if you assign the 'salvage' filter to it. FIRE FRIENDSHIP TORPEDOES ! Louis's epic skill guide v1.1 |

So... it's very interesting material to see what can be achieved through messing with the overview setting, but I'll most likely end up making my own since there's too much settings for my taste and either has too much things showing or not enough. But very interesting material nontheless just to get your hands dirty and see how you did it :)
Now I stumbled upon a little bug or feature, with your settings. I suppose most people don't have friends in corps/alliances they're at war with, but if you set high standings to a friend and his corp/alliance is at war with yours, he won't show on the battle filters though blinking red in space. Interestingly, he will show up with a red icon and star in a chat channel despite high personnal standing or even high corp standing. Guess most people would say I shouldn't set him blue in the first place, but it's not because I can pew them without concord showing that they're no longer friends otherwise... maybe a "OOC-friend-contact-whatever" setting missing from the game for those cool guys you meet around New-Eden despite the corp they belong to. Very interesting that there is a difference between the two filters. I'll have to do a little investigating in this and try to show friends on the overview filters if at war. Nothing better than shooting friends !
I encourage everyone to make their own setup. Most people who use my settings end up adapting them to their personal preference and I strongly recommend that.
Thanks for your feedback ! I'll look into this next week when back from vacation. FIRE FRIENDSHIP TORPEDOES ! Louis's epic skill guide v1.1 |

It has been updated for Inferno release.
I recommend you either update with the latest version or adjust your overview settings because it seems that the Inferno release might cause undesirable behaviour due to the addition of a new state, namely 'Pilot is an ally in one or more of your wars'.
It seems this has been added to all of your filters checked. So you will see allies in your old overview filters when fighting wars in highsec and might have a friendly fire (i.e. Concordokken !) accident. This is all unverified by the way, but I think I'm right.
Changes : There's been the usual tweaking and fiddling so expect some suprises. Most non-POS filters will have lost the forcefield, new PI thingies have been added in the 'all' filters and PI filter. I frowned and looked at CCP when I found out that Infrastructure Hub is now an Entity but Infrastructure Hubs is a Sovereignty Structure (herp derp ). I Guess this is because they changed all the FW bunkers into hubs.
The mining filters have been entirely redone.
For obscure reasons there was an appearance difference in the colortag and the background. This has been equalized. Note that this a major change in overview behaviour !
Remember : All wartargets have a blinking background in the overview ! You can only shoot them legitimately in highsec if they blink !!! Otherwise Concord will come and kill you.
Possible problems : As the filters are now, allies in wars will NOT show up in the overview battle tab. So beware if you live in 0.0 for example and your fighting a wardec with your neigbours, but also have an 'unofficial' war going with your neighbours !
Also remember that these settings are made from a 0.0 and highsec living pirate hunter/fleet fighter/carebear perspective. So if you want to be a lowsec pirate in a lowsec pirate corp you will have to change the settings so that 'outlaws' will not automatically count as targets for example. Those outlaws could be your corp mates in that case.
To get back to Sin Pew's question : I haven't been able to actually test this but the reason why contacts with good standing that are in a corp/alliance/militia that you are at war with do not show up in the battle tab is that the states are considered to work as AND instead of OR conditions. So the only way to let them show up is to also let ALL the contacts with good standing show up in the battle tab, even if you are not at war with them, which is of course exactly what we do not want. I fully agree that it should be possible to do this but I don't think it can be done currently. This all goes back to january 2011 when they decided to make a difference between contacts with neutral standing and people with no standing at all, which has added an extra (undesired) layer of complexity to the overview settings.
Disclaimer : Due to difficulty in creating all possible test conditions, many things considering the filters have not been tested. There are many assumptions underlying this so don't use it right away with your faction-fit Machariel, be careful and of course please let me know about any problems or bugs so I can correct them. Very nice Louis!
I am currently gathering information and data to write a simple application for generating Overview XMLs with a simple, easy to use UI.
My current plan is to use JavaFX 2.0 as it supplies a very simple way to create nice looking and fast UIs quickly, since I am not that experienced with app building, however generating a simple XML shouldn't be a problem. (Java FX also means it can be run as a web application.)
I am also going to look how enhancing all the in-game settings would be possible, such as overview background colors they don-¦t seem to be part of the overview settings which is kind of saddening...
I hope CCP incorporates it into the XMLs instead of it being buried somewhere else in the game cache-¦s dat files.
That looks nice, however I don't like how you have to enter an email address... |

Neither do I, actually, I didn't like the idea of providing a character Name and e-mail, so I tried to obtain the xml file by providing a temporary adress, but since the guy is too busy IRL, redirector expired already.

I might play with this a bit and make 2 versions, a plain and a pimped one. Won't happen soon but maybe by the next expansion
I did find a quick way to find "new" stuff that is added to the filters.
1. Export an overview that shows everything to XML. 2. Extract only the groupIDs from the filter onto a single line, separated by commas and surrounded by parentheses. (Can be done with a simple script.) 3. Import the values as a table into the latest static data dump SQL of EVE, lets call it overviewIds (give it its own auto incremental PK) 4. Run this SQL query:
select categoryName, groupName, invTypes.groupID from invTypes, invGroups, overviewIDs, invcategories where invTypes.groupID=invGroups.groupID and invTypes.groupID=overviewids.typeID and invcategories.categoryID = invgroups.categoryID group by invTypes.groupID order by categoryName
It should give you a nice list showing category name (e.g. Ship), group name (e.g. Logistics) and finally group ID as columns, the MySQL workbench allows you to export it as CSV ect. for easy parsing by a program.
I actually think the client exporter actually exports the items in the same order as they appear in the client so for shorter lists like the "Player is in my Corporation" states checklist you can just compare the exported XML IDs with what is shown in the client.
If you code it smart it shouldn't be that big of a problem... I think.
Oh and actually, while snooping around I found a guy from PL, suid0 that is making a new generator, you can download the xml file directly too.
Check out his thread:

Direct link to generator: (Be warned though, suid0 has said this is ALPHA version so use with care...)
