Or do other people try to rotate and zoom while looking at someone else's screen shots or videos of EVE?

Yes you are, and Yes I have tried to do that. 
I remember someone had a website for EVE, and when you looked at it for more than 40 seconds the "Locking" Sound would start playing. Imagine if you were in safe spot in 0.0, cloaked, while just browsing the website, and AFK, and that sound comes in....

I think I've done it once or twice. But don't worry, there have been several threads over the years similar to this one, so you can rest assured that you are far from alone.
It's still nuts though.

never yet done it with Eve-O, but it happened all the time when i played Homeworld.
To the point where I was trying to look at the back of Exel spreadsheets at work. (Sleep deprivation FTW)

I have a real nice screenie of myself as my wallpaper, you couldn't count the number of times I click it and the client doesn't respond, so I go to the esc button, hmm, ctrl q, hmm, oh wake up you idiot!!!

I've tried to change the view on my desktop before by dragging the mouse arrow around. Almost worked too...atleast I think it did.
On a side note evenually I'll find a program that'll actually allow me to do it and then I won't be crazy.

Never done it.
I have custom colors on my interface, and elements of it (overview etc) that aren't in the default position, and none of the screenshots will match what my in-game screens look like.
So screenshots don't trick me.
