Hello All,
I have been using Eve under Ubuntu Linux for about 10 months and it was fine (for my uses) but over the last couple of patches it has been slowing down to the point where it is unplayable - even for sole mining or Level 1 Missions! (yes even with latest updated Everything - Ubuntu, Video Card Drivers, etc)
So I am thinking of going to Windows (Shock horror) for Eve.
My Question:
Has anyone out there done the same thing and what was the resulting speed of Eve like? Do you find that the "Lag" you had under Linux is gone?
I found some speed issues (re:lag) were better with an updated driver but it keeps slowing down with each jump/missions/etc so I think it is the Video card driver not freing up memory (or using it differently).
Can someone who has used Linux comment as to whether Eve is faster graphically under Windows?
(NB: I've never played under windows only Linux and so dont have anything to compare it to. I've never been able to get into PvP or more than 10 opponents (as per some missions) due to the speed issues.)
Thanks in advance. Edit: My main issue it that I get Really Jealous when I see youtube vids of others Eve. I'd never get that level of responsivnes in Linux Eve......So I wanted to see if Windows Eve has that sort of gameplay and responsiveness.... Thanks. Regards,
Jason Brisbane

If you are using the 'official' linux eve client, then you are not alone. If you have been using the wine client + premium, then not sure.
Of COURSE EVE will be more responsive under windows. It was written for dx9 natively after all. There will always be a bit of slowdown when translating dx calls to opengl.
That said, if you have been using the 'cedega-ized' version, you may want to go to wine 1.1.6 + eve premium before doing an entire OS install just for EVE.
Dual booting is definitely an option though. (Personally, while the fps is about 15% slower under wine than native, I'm having no issues ---other than a fullscreen/windowing issue that is known and being worked on.)

Thanks Derek.
I am definitly toying with dual booting vista (it came with the Laptop).
I'd rather not loose Ubuntu as I got the laptop soely to run Eve and Ubuntu, but Eve is a higher priority (and since Firefox and Open office is available in Windows I could use it if pressed.
Thanks. I'll try to dual boot and see how I go.

OK, I've been converted..
As one who bought my current laptop one year ago SOLELY for the purpose of playing Eve Online, I must say the difference is AMAZING!!!
By changing from Ubuntu Linux with latest drivers to Vista with cd drivers: The FPS has increased at LEAST by 400% - moving the camera around as fast as I can in a belt produces NO Lag, or graphics glitches, or issues. Startup is slightly faster. Sound worked even though I didnt actually installed sound drivers for Vista.
Sorry but I'm going to have to keep Vista and dual boot - JUST for the ability to run EVE!
It's well worth the effort to downgrade to Vista to get the speed and performance increase!
Just FYI to those out there thinking of the same....

Sorry to hear you use the "v" word. (blech...for a ton of reasons.) If it were me going the dual boot route, I'd have used XP sp3 as it has a MUCH smaller memory footprint (especially if all you're doing is using it for EVE). Vista is a ram hog, DRM infested p.o.s. (imho) and tbh if you were using XP you'd probably have even better performance than what you are seeing now.
Personally, I've benched my own system with straight winblows XP vs. wine 1.1.6 +eve premium, and the difference isn't that great, so if you were experiencing that much of a difference I'd say you have something not happy with hardware + ubuntu rather than vista being such a happy day operating system. (just a guess.)
(Oh, and under ubuntu, sound works just fine...you just have to use a prefix (padsp) and set wine to use OSS. )
Anyway, good to hear you are 'evein' away regardless of platform. |

Edited by: Valandril on 25/10/2008 08:57:17 Eve premium + wine works great on my gentoo, can't complain on fps or anything. What happened to you is most liekly the fact that compiz was added later on as ubuntu-default and well, runing any 3d + compiz will always result in crap fps (and this is most likely the case). Simple solution is to get ie. compiz-icon and when you want to play eve, simply switch window-manager from compiz to metacity.
Problem with eve sound in ubuntu lies in the fact that guys from ubuntu decided for whatever reason to use pulseaudio which is causing many headaches.
Also hint for ppl using evepremium + wine, install dx9 libs :D ---

Actually, uh..why? I'm running eve premium + wine 1.1.6 and I've never installed anything BUT EVE and wine and its working fine. What differences would installing dx9 libs (I'm assuming you mean native dx from ms here) have on EVE?
The only 'tweaks' i've had to do with wine were the padsp prefix to get sound under ubuntu (pulse issues.) and I use taskset to pin the application to one cpu. (I'm also using the latest compiz and my fps is still just fine. (50-90fps in station, 30-60fps in space). -with premium at 1900x1200. |

Hmm then maybe it was fixed already, i remember that earlier there were some glitches, which were fixed by getting dx9 natives (it will also allow you to run a lot more games but that's different topic). ---

Thanks.
Yep, added compiz and emerald and stuff but removed (uninstalled) all of it and set graphics options to NONE but it didnt improve anything.
I've dual booted to Ubuntu 8.04 (I was running under 7.10). I dont know if there was a compatibility issue wuith 7.10 and the latest Nvidia drivers ( it worked but a bit slowly).
PS: I would have used XP but my laptop came with Vista CD's and there's no way I'm paying MS for thier crappy OS if I have anything to do with it! (I'm aware of all the vista issues...)

The performance on my system is excellent. I do have pretty solid hardware specs though: Nvidia 8800GTS SSC 640MB, Core 2 Quad 2.5ghz Yorkshire, 8GB RAM, MSI Diamond P7N motherboard. I'm running 64bit Ubuntu server and this box is pretty busy in the background. I'm running the vanilla EVE with Cedega and my FPS rarely drops below 60. Compiz fusion is running and EVE even runs fine on the desktop cube.
I have a seperate Vista box for gaming and I have EVE installed on it as well. Ironically, EVE runs faster on my linux box. It's probably not because of the hardware, my Vista box's specs are technically superior for gaming (faster CPU, system bus and memory clocks, SLI, etc) nor does it have the background service load of my linux server. It may have something to do with running a 64bit native OS.
I can't help much in troubleshooting your problem but here was my build process: Install Ubuntu Server 64 bit Installed KDE Installed GNOME (I know, but I like 'em both) Installed EnvyNG: EnvyNG automatically installs the correct ATI or Nvidia drivers for your card) Installed Compiz: Installed EVE: I used the .deb installer from the website.
The only problem I had was with ALSA not being detected by the configuration manager. So I went to my sound settings in GNOME an specified ALSA for each type of playback. After that the client started up fine.
The main difference in performance is the periodic lag I would experience under Vista. For some reason it would stall for 2 or 3 seconds every minute or so. Otherwise it ran fine but that periodic lag drove me crazy. I don't experience that lag on linux, so I'd have to say that it's actually running better on Linux at the moment.

Hmm can you say what HW you got there ? Also just removing compiz may not work, try installing compiz-icon/fusion-icon and there switch window manager to metacity so you will be clear that compiz is off. As for video drivers, i suggest to skip apt ones (they are waaaaay outdated) and install from nvidia site.
For testing purposes, grab other 3d game that works great on wine (HoMM5 ie) and see how this works, you can lookup http://appdb.winehq.org/ <- here, how does certain game work under wine, so you can narrow down what is the issue, eve or something with ubuntu. ---

The hints and tips in the above post helped my fps quite a bit running Eve in Ubuntu 8.04 and now under 8.10.
