At the moment it seems the markets (true) demand is vastly overpriced. No this post isn't to complain, let me explain. Buyers are buying off buyers who then sell to buyers, or at least that's the way it looks to me.
What could be wrong with it you ask? Well manufactures have materials they need to factor in. A combat pilot runs the risk of losing said item. You might argue that the re-seller risks isk to competitors however by creating false demand by buying up all stock he can control pricing.
I don't really mind this but it really is the only section of this game completely dependent on competition with other pilots. As we often can tell this takes effect as .01 price changing every interval. In effect this just irritates pretty much everyone involved.
So I figured something like a product degradation would make sense. The longer it remains in open competition the more likely to sustain damage or something like that.
Having said all this I still don't know if it would be a good idea. But figured I'd post anyhow.

Heh.
It would be a major change to the way a central component of the game works, and as such it probably won't be received very well, and it could have unforeseen repercussions. The market system isn't just a battleground where "buyers" can engage in passive-aggressiveness, it's also the source of items for the playerbase.
Imagine if Blizzard made changes to the way the Auction House works, making it more difficult for people to get gear from it.
Anyway, the stuff that's being traded isn't perishable. You're talking about chunks of metal designed to survive explosions (missiles) and irradiation (lasers), and various devices that go into them. What's the expiration date for a car's brake pads?
EDIT: The .01 stuff doesn't bother "most", or even "a lot" of people. We stay away and just buy stuff at whatever the price is, and traders can sit in Jita and sing songs for all I care and doesn't bother me none. I don't go to Jita specifically to avoid them, works good enough.

Fair points on all I posted it anyway because I thought it was an interesting idea. But no the damage can exist in many forms; say the more times you edit the price the more likely a percentage of stock goes 'missing'.
As for making it harder for player base to buy items I don't think its the manufacturers that generally push up prices. I could well be wrong though.

Ah and here really is my issue, since starting in eve I've loved the Rens market as a practical answer to Jita. If you want to rip someone off or sell vast amounts you go Jita. But it seems Rens is fast becoming another Jita with the amount of buy to sell that I've seen. Again I'm not saying this with definitive fact; more just a curious post.
Thanks for the well thought out reply.
