It seems remarkable how quickly you can get out .01 isked on buy orders. There are really only 3 other people competing on the market I mess with, but it seems within minutes of me uping my orders, they have done the same. Are these people really there glued to their machines checking every order?

Okay, this is too consistent. It truly must be one moron that uses another alt to ask this same tired old ass question once per week.
Hmmmm, you notice every time you update your orders that they've updated theirs and you want to know if "they" have no life?

Edited by: MataHarry on 26/10/2008 02:55:42 if this is an automated program, then isn't this bloody obvious, why doesn't ccp stop it? I was told before somewhere this wasn't the case and I was imagining things.

Yes. There are really people out there that will check every one of their orders every 5 minutes. Just like there are people out there that go ratting or mining. It earns them income to do so, so they do.
The only ways to combat them is to do it yourself, be smarter about it, undercut them enough so that it's no longer worth their time to do it, or just go somewhere else.

This thread is funny. I tried to seriously contribute to the last thread and got my face chewed on (justifiably I admit). And so, "lulul market bots lulul." |

Or try to figure out when they will log off, for instance if you are up against two determined 0.1ers at EU primetime midweek, then logging on at Midnight (or just late generally) will often mean that they have logged off, if you can try to make your orders top the list for when the US players log on you can usually fill orders relatively quickly, but as with all things market related its an inexact science which requires you to know your chosen trade items and their markets well to make any real cash quickly.
On a related note i understand some bigshot coming in and destroying all the small time traders profit margins by reducing his own margins slightly, lets say an item is trading for 30k and selling for 35k so Mr Bigtime starts buying them at 33.5k thus elminating any small timers. I totally get that, what i DONT get is when some joker whos playing the 0.01 game suddenly thinks, 'ooh i know ill add 0.05 that'll blow the competition away!!' I mean why do that??

You know this is a non-argument right? If the reaction to your action is consistent and done by the same char - 24/7 - then indeed the reactor has no life.
I am no mood to explain this further. |

Exactly, they all do this manually. Remember, you are but one of nearly 300,000 players in EVE fighting over some menial item on the market.
So, firstly welcome to Market PvP, the most vicious and active pvp element in game bar none.
Second, trading is so important because to some the ~20% differential in trading via buy and sell orders over the actual buy/sell prices can account for people's entire profit margins.
Therefore, it's keenly contested. |

You know this thread is hilarious because of the people joining in the discusion who are the users of the Trader Bots pushing their denials.
Any properly formatted Google search will locate at least three pieces of software that perform market orders automatically on the Eve client. They all fail virus inspection because they are based off of key logging code but that doesn't stop players with several computers from creating alts, setting up the Trader bot and watching several markets using a just-in-time buy-to-sell strategy. I've sent detailed evidence about alt naming, usage, failure to communicate, exacting purchasing algorithms, etc in many petitions and never once has CCP deleted one of these accounts TMK.
My advice is to research these programs, compete against them and realize that they can be your ally because they can be manipluated into some seriously stupid postitions that benefit you. CCP has neither the will nor the tools and manpower to hunt down these players and since they are paying customers bringing in hard cash to some underpaid people somewhere in the world I am begrudgingly accepting them.

Alternately, When you set your buy order to outbid the other person, don't outbid them by 1 isk.
Outbid them by 10% of the spread. Raise them until they fold. You never play high stakes poker and call every round, you drive people away until you control the table.
This lowers your margin of profit significantly, of course, but ruins these guys. The less often you want to check the market, the larger the margin change should be. Once a week can get away with 20%, daily, 5%. More often then that, do something else. More trade alts in more hubs.
In any case, I am only saying this because it is good for the customer, and while I profit off the market spread myself, when I want something for personal use, I want it now. More people using this same trick the less that hurts me :) |

Right because no group of humans averaging close to 800 people in a single area could possible ever remotely update orders on a near constant basis.

Actually I am talking about products worth 20m and above so the number of buyers and sellers whose name I see in my journal are limited to the same 6 who are all moving things in a very precise and similar manner 8 to 16 hours everyday.
Get out of the small time markets and the bots get obvious. |

Because running the bot an extra 15 to 7 hours is just too expensive in terms of electricity, amirite?
Shouldn't be hard to write a market bot from a coding standpoint. Just like it shouldn't be hard to write one to submit orders to an online brokerage. However, unlike RL markets in eve respond much better to manipulation with trivial amount of funds, so a truly clever tradebot would be very, very hard to pull off. And would require constant maintenance.
In contrast, the cost of a human per hour is dirt cheap in some areas of the world.

The human labor hypothesis would explian why some of these opponents log in the same Eve time almost everyday and off at about the same time. Some of the traders do operate all day and when they are missing it is so obvious to me when I can't lead the market around by the nose anymore. Disconnects would explain those.
I'm not saying anything should be done about it. This is the way trade is in Jita and many other hubs; hardcore.

Not many people are high in my stats. If they get high, I investigate. Never found anything suspicious in my market area. |

The other things people fail to grasp when competing against multiple buy orders all upping at the same time.
Did you ever stop to maybe think its the same person with 3 to 8 orders on the same item, making YOU think its multiple traders all vying for the same commodity?
