It sounds like you're doing CEO work (organization, planning, long term goals, trying to grow the corp and find alliances to join) without being the CEO (are you the CEO?). Since you're doing all of this, your friends might want to consider giving you the role and letting you.
As far as what ships and how many skillpoints are needed, this game has always been touted as the only one that lets newbies be useful in a "veterans" group. Sure, you'll be doing tackling and scouting, and everyone else is doing the DPS and claiming the kills, but what you're doing is useful, and you're accepted.
Several paths of training have emerged with the last few expansions, and of course the "average" level of gear has progressed, and is now T2 ships and T2 weapons. But, basically, one path is to train for capital ships so you can do the DPS in large-scale (400-ship fleets) warfare in 0.0, and another path is to aim for small-scale PVP and train some sort of T2 ship (HACs, Recons, HICs).
The thing with capital ships is, ok so you've trained for dreads, and all of a sudden you can fly this hugely expensive ship that's good for POS destruction. Who's gonna recruit you? Recruitment in these big 0.0 alliances is based on trust, and if you don't trust them enough to even take your ship into their space, and they don't trust you enough to let you into their comms channels... the training time is wasted.
I think that if you guys want to be in 0.0 flying capital ships, you have to start on getting into an alliance now. Train something useful (tackling, maybe interceptors, or maybe Ewar cruisers, or T2 weaponry for a battleship so you can shoot at POSes with the big guys), and at the same time do work the diplomatic channels and get recruited. Participate in fleet action, get a reputation with them.
Now, how are you guys making money? You talk about plans for capitals and/or T2 ships; are you making that much from salvaging in lowsec?
Personally, I like small-gang warfare. Cov-ops, interdictors, interceptors, I think they're NICE and I'd much rather specialize in one of them than in dreads or carriers. I'd be very useful to any 0.0 alliance in one of them. I did, however, train battleships (and T2 guns for them), because ratting or missioning are excellent ways to make money, and the battleship is well suited for those two activities.
