Edited by: Lockc on 27/10/2008 02:24:23 The title says it all, there seems to be a lot of options for running EVE on linux, just curious which is currently getting the best performance with all the new patches and whatnot. I'm gonna be switching completely over to Ubuntu soon, and EVE is my last big 'will it work' concern.

Virtualization will not work at all, due to it not being able to use 3d acceleration.
Wine is completely awesome (except for the focus-switch issue atm)
Official Cedega client is a bit meh. Mediocre performance, stuck to classic graphics and a heck of a lot of other bothers (no numpad for instance).
Balance is important, but you will always adapt to changing circumstances and you don't whine about stuff you can't change. |

Yea I'm running ubuntu from inside windows right now, and with cedega its pretty unresponsive, my system has more than enough power to run EVE comfortably, haven't tried the premium client on it, just because I like having it run so smooth :)
Does the regular client work well with wine? I'd prefer to stick with that, I like switching around a lot when I play.

That is not entirely true.
It might depend on what kind of virtualization technology you are using. For example, I can get 3d cards to work under vserver guests. Then you could run it under wine on the vserver guest. Problem is I couldn't get nvidia to run; and the other card that I could get running was not wine+eve compliant.
For kvm, there were some guys doing pci passthrough stuff, but I don't know if it is there yet. Haven't checked.
I don't know about Xen stuff.

Edited by: Derek Medrana on 29/10/2008 18:45:54 wine + premium. <<that's a PERIOD.
The official client has crap fps and crashes quite often.
My toon posting here is a new account after a couple months forced hiatus, but as the guy who posted the EVE linux gfx how-to sticky, I'm frankly apalled at what at one point was a smooth and decent way to run EVE under linux.
Also, the q1 2008 for premium graphics for the official client is beyond JOKE at this point.
The LACK of communication here in a "tech" sub-forum by TG is also completely meh, as CCP at one point indicated that they would have a decent presence here.
Considering that wine runs premium gfx smoother than the OFFICIAL client does with the classic gfx its not even a question as to what to use to play.
The only other way I'd suggest would be to use the official Crossover GAMES for Linux client which has "official" EVE support. Since they are the primary sponsors for the wine project, that would be another avenue to utilize, but they DO charge for their product normally.
