Hello. I am preparing to move to level 3 missions. I have a Drake standing by, now I am thinking about the fit. It is a passive-tank with signature slightly over 400 m^2; I can shoot at 69 kilometres (missiles reach 73, but I have Long Range Targeting at level 3 only) and move at 147 m/s.
What DPS do I need to be able to withstand in order to complete every level 3 mission, while being cautious? I will probably use three rat-specific hardeners.
As the two lowest shield resistances are EMP (15%) and thermal (32%) (without the hardeders installed), it would be probably the best to tell me the average DPS in an EMP/thermal damage dealing rat mission (like "You need to withstand 300 DPS of EMP and 150 of Thermal".). Thank you!

There probably is 1 or 2 storyline missions that'd give you trouble in the lv3 area. Aside from that you won't have any problems. |

If you ARE indeed cautious (and quick), using mission-specific hardeners, for most L3 missions a 200 DPS tank is overkill... you could probably survive most with just 100 DPS tank. L4s, while a 400 DPS tank is enough for some, a bad aggro combined with low damage output can make you end up facing severak thousands worth of incoming damage.
In other words... the "bare minimum tank needed" varies so much that fiting a tank adequate for all missions of that level is way past overkill for most missions of that level. Suffice to say, you CAN tank enough damage for most L4s in an unrigged passive-shield-tanked Ferox. Most L4s won't even dent the shields of a rigged passive-shield-tanked Drake... while others might make it melt in minutes if you don't react fast.

Worst LVL4 for me so far was The Cargo Delivery - my CNR has a 540 DPS tank - but the 2nd spawn landed right ontop of me and I got hung up on stupid asteroid.
Got me down to 25% shields but that's because I use Invul II's instead of enemy specific hardeners, I think.
Peace and love, Josh

I've been playing with Hictors (Onyx, Broadsword) and their big passive tanks. I've been going in and grabbing full room aggro from some of the harder missions. Some of them will break an 800 DPS tank. (Pirate Invasion-sansha, WC-serpentis) I have yet to find one that will break an 1100 DPS tank though
Haven't tried out the bonus room in AE yet.

Try Enemies Abound 5/5. Go in and just wait for half an hour. I doubt many ships could survive a full aggro... there's over 3k raw DPS incoming on a full spawn (it's timed, not triggered by any destructions).

I'm a bit curious about this as well, I've been running level 4 missions in shield tanked ships for a while (either a Sleipnir or a Maelstorm) both have an active tank of 600dps+ never had a problem tanking everything, on the missions where I can't tank I generally kill the rats fast enough to reduce the damage to a manageable level, both those ships have a huge bonus to active tanking with my skills (BC V and BS V).
I'm getting to the point where I want to splash out and sink some isk into a nice mission running ship. I'm looking at getting a Machariel and will probably armor tank it, unlike the sleip and maelstrom it gets no tanking bonus and playing around with EFT it seems I get a much lower tank only around 300-400 dps even with faction tank. The question is can I get away with a 300dps tank for running missions, especially as I'd ideally be dishing out about 900dps+

It depends. I was able to run some L4s with a well-fit Myrmidon, hardeners depending on the rats, and a mission-report. It's easier now that I'm in a battleship, but occasionally the tank is still pretty stretched.

Well, yea, it's not a mission where you want to sit still no matter what you're flying. If you move, you can finish that mission in a 450 defense Drake (like I do in mine).

what did you get 1100dps on?
Wouldn't be that hard.
Abaddon 8xMegaPulse (XRay), 4xCapRech, 2xLAR, 4xResist(2EM/2TH), 1xCPR, 3xCCC Cap stable at 37%, can tank 1404 EM/TH DPS.
I actually use a similar fit, only with an AB, and 3 resist (EM/TH/EANM) and 2 CPR. Tanks 936 EM/TH.
Most L4's only need one repairer actually, so about 400-500 DPS tank can handle most L4s. There are some nasty ones that can break even the meatiest tanks if you get pocket aggro, but it's pretty obvious when you encounter them. Lesson is align first, then poke one group and see if it's bad. :) Thaddeus |
