Hi!
I'm getting very tired of missionrunning, so i've been looking for other ways to earn money (manufacturing and mining is not in interest atm.) so i was looking a bit around the forums and by incident found the ratting 101 thread, which i'm reading now.
So far ratting seems to be my next "job" in EVE! - i'm heading for 0.0 ratting. but what ship should i use (Caldari ships is not an option)? i would prefer Amarr ships. and have been looking for an Harbinger or a Zealot, but are these ships any good at ratting at all?
Any suggestions welcome! (please post setup along with ship)

It's a pity you rule out caldari ships - the Cerberus is an excellent ratter.
Depending on the rat types, a sacriledge is an efective ratter. If you're ratting EM-weak drones, then Zealot or Harb will do fine. If you're ratting Serps, then even an arbitrator can probably do the job.

First things first - are you part of an alliance that is in 0.0? If not, you won't be targetted by just rats and so you should take into consideration what ship you use. While a Zealot may be sufficient to do the 0.0 ratting (it is), you also have to think about surviving the players that will do their best to end your life.
If you ARE part of a 0.0 alliance, then go for a combination of survival and dps. Personally I'd go battleship, but that's just me...

best? i would say domi with this fitting:
1 heavy neaut 2 tractorbeams 2 salvagers 1 T2 cloak
1 MWD 4 T2 cap rechargers
1 large T2 rep 2 active hardener 2 T2 CPRs 2 Istabs
T2 large drones. Ecm drones. warriors.
best ratter ever. wont ever need more ammo, plenty of cargobay. what it cant chase of with neauts and small drones it can run from with the istabs.
PS: for best effect have an alt in a cloaked indy(cov opsed blockade runner after QR in a SS so you have somewhere to drop of the lootz and salvage.

Haven't been in 0.0 much, have we? The heavy neut is one of the single most effective means of getting a ratting battleship to safety when it gets jumped by hostiles.
And it's not like a Dominix needs guns...

If you get caught, then you probably deserve to die.
A heavy neut is a nice mod for pvp setups. Nice for pve if it can be fitted. But certainly not required.

Edited by: Dulas on 29/10/2008 20:45:28 I personally use a raven to rat in 0.0, and would use nothing else if the rats web/scram. All I will say is cloak + range, range, and more range. IÆve never once lost a raven ratting, ever.
Edit: Forgot to mention. Keeping alined and warping to safe when someone enters system is a must. However where you are the most vulnerable is when moving to and from the system you are ratting in. Dead end systems without stations are nice as there is litte traffic, but expect a Rapier on the other side of the gate 90% of the time. If you have a cyno alt you can get him into a cloak in no time and use him to watch the other side of the gate for you.

Really it depends on your skills, your style, and whether you use alt accounts and as another poster said, are you in a corp/alliance that has access to 0.0
If you arent in a 0.0 corp/alliance you will spend your time running, or just getting ganked. Many 0.0 alliances have 20M sp requirements and these are very mature savy players running around in roving gangs of T2 ships that have seen years of PvP and know what theyre doing.
Raven is safest, most skill friendly, ratter. You can change damage types, pick your range, tanks great etc. With 1 M in sp you can tank 3 BS spawns no prob. I know peeps that AFK in a Raven with FOF's (missions though)
I dont have an alt account, and like to loot/salvage while I rat. The above domi setup is pretty good, but you need 3 hardners, 1 EANM, and 1 lrg armor repair to tank decent spawns and thats with decent skills. I like a Megathron with 6 blasters, 1 salvage, 1 tractor, MWD, armor tank setup as above and the rest cap stuff, plus 5 T2 Ogres. MWD into range, gank with blasters and drones, salvage and loot while killing the next. No need to make a whole separate trip for loot/salvage.
Amar is great cuz no ammo, as is the Domi for extended ratting.

Laser Pilgrim, pain to catch and does 400dps or there abouts. HML curse is also good as people tend to leave it well alone and it actually does some good dps too, as well as have the ability to choose the damage type. Bit odd but it works, however the Pilgrim's stealthiness will make it easier to get out to null sec so I reckon that.
I can't remember the exact setup but was something along the lines of Heavy Pulse laser IIs, MWD, cap battery (so you don't have to keep getting 400 or 800s to run it all), relevant hardeners, armor repairer and heatsinks to get more oomph. Maybe some cap stuff in mids and obviously a cloak. You get the idea.

I agree.
High: 3xHeavy Elec. Blaster/Antimatter M, 1 salvager, 1 tractor beam Med: AB, cap recharger, large cap battery Low: MAR II, 3 x Rat Specific Hardeners
2x heavy 2x med 1x light drones as team 1 5x light drones as team 2
Use cheap stuff only. You don't want to feel bad when you blow up. I think a similar setup should also be possible with arbitrator. |

Isnt there a sentry domi that puts out about 800 dps at 40k or something? I cba to eft right now. I'd say that one is probably the best, since you can, somewhat, change damagetype and got almost close range dps at, well, long range.
Raven with some torp rigs and a MWD might also be nice, failing that I'd vote for my 1k dps close range phoon (which operates sub 10k, which might put it behind raven and domi)
Imho, when it comes to beltratting, dps is king. You just need to survive the spawn and be able to clear BS rats in 30-50 secs, rest is icing.

torp raven is the best ratter around.
it does the most dps while still having a tractor/salvager . I doesn't need high skills , it can easily tank, you always have the perfect damage type, no fitting issues at all.
And ratting without your alliance owning the space , isn't cost effective at all.
Also ratting in cruisers isn't cost effective, the only cruiser sized vessle that makes a good ratter is the Isthar imo, but then the domi is better.
you have intel channels, if you see hostiles inbound , you go back to a station/pos , you change to a pvp ships , fight them off , rat again.

This should be kind of self explanatory, but you never know... if you get yourself into a situation which makes a heavy neut useful, chances are you can cash in on insurance already.
Get your ratter into a pos bubble when hostiles are in system, or better yet, change it for your pvp ship.
The only "pvp tool" that makes sense on your ratter is a cloak to hide in case the system has no friendly POS.
