Edited by: Xyn Armanne on 30/10/2008 03:35:09 I'm not so sure the "server crashed", although I do see that Tranquility is still in the process of starting up.
I'm willing to bet something bad happened on CCP's network -- be sure to read the Players News Centre post about how they had a "core network switch" fail horribly yesterday. Ten bucks says this is a single-point-of-failure in their network.
The forums were returning HTTP 500 when attempting to post a new post, and the Players News Centre was returning HTTP 500 as well. I cease to see what these website features have to do with the Tranquility server, which is why I think something network-oriented happened.
Also, for what it's worth, during the outage, TCP RST was being returned to anyone attempting to connect to Tranquility. A broken router or switch could induce this behaviour. Here's confirmation of that fact (ignore the invalid TCP checksum error, it's due to TCP checksum offloading being enabled on my NIC):
- 0.000000 192.168.1.50 74.125.19.127 TCP 4192 > http [FIN, ACK] Seq=1 Ack=1 Win=54750 [TCP CHECKSUM INCORRECT] Len=0

Its always been that way. CCP tried once to keep the forums going during a crash, but that weak attempt only lasted so many crashes.

THIS WILL BE LOST IN THE PLETHORA OF REPLIES BUT..
A good IT department aims for 99% uptime.
We have 95%, less any ad hod twiddling that seems to be going on.. and we're paying for 100%.
I'm not happy. AT ALL.

My guess is when they made teh switch to 64bit it didn't work as they had said. Which woudl explain the loss in packets and such, most likely because it wasnt designed for 64bit servers to begin with, but I cant say i know what the hell Im talking about. But apparently even the site's server crashed or the network dropped state side.

Edited by: CyPhEr UmOs on 30/10/2008 04:08:49 Hardware failure is always part of the IT game we play. These types of things cannot be forseen and the only thing an IT department can do is get on the problem when it arises. The best, most expensive hardware in the world can crash. I think CCP is doing an outstanding job and I applaude them. Keep up the good work.
The reason the website (forums) and the game sever go down together is that they work off the same database. Game server database goes offline then no forums to post into. IFTCO |

I've never seen anything built on slower models make a switch to more up to date systems without a complete rebuild of the engine, plain and simple. Especially when it comes to anything Windows compatible. And it does say in the EULA that they reserve the right to spend our money we pay as they want, but there's no upward form of discussion about how they shoudl go about spending it, especially when it comes to technical issues such as cycles server side compared to actual cycles interpreted by the processors. And so far their dev blogs seem to be some form of noob chat about things that dont seem relevant to eve, but more relevant to atracting WOW players. Maybe CCP should consider another style of development.

Pff...
Whatever happened to test servers then? And why on EARTH is the Eve web server so closely linked to the game servers that they should all go down together ? RIDICULOUS!
FFS - At the VERY LEAST, CCP, your web server should be *completely* divorced from the same ISP, WAN, LAN, and power supply that provide for the game.
Jeez...

"network issues - tuesday, 28 october reported by CCP Wrangler | 2008.10.28 22:56:41
Update: We have resolved the network issues outlined below and apologize for any inconveniences experienced during this time."
here's the link but the "read more" doesn't link properly atm http://myeve.eve-online.com/news.asp?a=single&nid=2483&tid=1
Can't be the same issue as above as that was fixed, unless someone was lying again. So whats the new bug or reason for this last crash?
