Quote: I remember Jita was announced to be the new Yulai by a group of players that dominated the Yulai market, even before the highway changes were in effect. So the short answer is the players chose it, but I suspect you're asking why they chose it.
I have a feeling that after the highways changes, Jita as the economic capital was not a sure thing. Only once a hub gets a critical mass of sellers, it becomes a runaway affect with the sellers forcing the hubs position by forcing all to come and trade there. I find it interesting (and I never knew) that a group of wealthy traders tried to make a new Yulai in Jita prior to the highways changes. Like they founded a new Constantinople. I wonder if they imagined how big it would become.
Thanks for the input btw.

Having a 'one stop shop' station is really important to save hassle and that's one the reasons Jita is so popular. You know which station has everything. Same for Rens BTT station. Nonni could be up there with the best, but although the system has most items, they are spread over the bajillion stations in there --

Rens is where it's at, king of all the trade hubs.
Our corp just moved to Black rise region from Heimatar, I thought cool now I'm closer to Jita, but it sucks, Jita is overpriced local is full of scammers and contract spam and the buy orders are so damn low because every man and he's dog want to sell stuff there.
Makes me wish I was back at good old moon 8 in Rens, only thing Jita has over rens is faction items as most contract sellers are based in Jita.
If theres a region most in need of trade hub I vote Derelik, so hard to buy stuff there, I once found a rapier for sale very cheaply then had to fly to about 7 or 8 different systems just to get fittings for it

Originally by: Last Wolf I don't go to jita cause it is cheap. I go to jita because I can get everything in the same station. No need to jump around to a dozen different systems and 2 dozen stations in a half fitted ship.
This. :)

Edited by: Ryoji Tanakama on 31/10/2008 12:32:30 J4M4 has a whole string of low-level agents, one jump from Kisogo.
It was the natural mission running ground for every state war graduate, that station in particular has always had hugely heavy use, even before it's current market status developed.
The market developed in J4M4 because the customers were already there, and had always been there.

Originally by: Sionn Klorgh I know the highway changes caused it but I'm wondering what factors go into deciding why a particular system becomes a economic capital. How did Jita take the title after the highway changes. Why not a system next to Jita? Perhaps that was a possibility but once the selling tipped toward Jita, sellers just kept re-enforcing it. Perhaps it could of been a neighboring system but just luck decided on Jita.
Anyone have an insight?
You must not have been around four years ago....Jita became the 'HUB of lag' back then. Damn you CCP! Why did you have to make such a good game?? Yes you drew me back AGAIN! Oh well wheres the Omber? |

A few misconceptions to correct:
As stated, the "highway" system had nothing to do with warp to zero. Simply as it was hard to travel from a region to another, the regions were connected with highway jumps, which all happened to cross in the system of Yulai. As such, you could visit different regions fast for price checks, and it was fast to get items into Yulai from anywhere. (At the same time, the smuggler gates connecting different 0.0 areas were introduced - for the backstory, see the short story named Forsaken Ruins.)
Then, to fix the centralization, the highways were shifted, and Yulai wasn't that easily accessible any more. Jita had a few aces up its sleeve, including numerous stations and agents (not only low levels, back then - agents have been moved at least twice since the early days of Jita) as well as being in the right location for a game of Caldari Online.
I do actually remember that when I started, in addition to "Jitaargh" the system known as "Lagsulaert" was also a hub. As well as Rens, and Agil was already a regional hub, though Amarr wasn't exactly that popular, at least as far as I could see (though the combination of Amarr and Penirgman near by meant that you could get most things with but a few jumps).
Warp to zero was a response to most people and their dogs making warp to zero bookmarks (instas, instant jump/dock bookmarks) for quick travel, which caused considerable load on the server. The introduction of WTZ wasn't coupled with the shift of travel routes.
Even after Jita was "nerfed" several times, it has become large enough to stay as a hub just because it is a hub, I feel, though when the lag was on its worst, it was enough to drive people away which helped the regional hubs grow. If CCP manages to keep the lag at bay, Jita might grow even more. (It is never possible to "fix lag" - there's a saying on the software engineer circles stating that the designers are competing with evolution itself in trying to make things "idiot proof" - as they make better systems, nature makes better idiots. If CCP buys a supercomputer and makes it possible to cram three thousand people into Jita and keep the node working alright, there will ultimately be four thousand people there whining about the lag. The same for fleet battles.)
