Considering you could build a very high performance rig for the cost of a single populated ram drive that would offer intangible benefits over a plain old raptor or cheapy suicide raid setup :P

For people with more money than sense. Of course, it's not entirely inconceivable they might come down in price eventually. I might buy one if/when they're under ú200 in price. ____________________

Whats the point of performance when you can barely fit XP + 1 game on it? IIRC there are some games that you wouldn't be able to fit (AoC I believe). __________________________________________________________

For one, its not exactly designed with gamers in mind- if you're running a terminal service with a small core of killer apps, that extra performance would be invaluable, and the small size wouldn't be an issue.
If you were to use it in a gaming rig, you'd just have to micromanage a bit- have a standard HDD for long term storage, and just move anything you're currently using on to the RAM disk for the added performance when you need it. ------

I wonder how much it would cost to get one of those filled with SRAM...

SATA 5, with a high-quality defragger can get you damn close with much better high-volume read/write numbers than that for 1/5th the price. _______________ Pwett CEO, Founder, & Executor <Q> QUANT Hegemony

Although ONLY with a good hardware SATA5. Even Linux RAIDZ2 (RAID 5 using ZFS 2) can't match the performance of a 3 Ware RAID 5 hardware controller.
However, even a 3 Ware controller AND drives is going to be cheaper than this crazy thing. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

I'm sure I've seen a similar device with onboard batteries that recharge while it's running.

I saw similar things in which people didnt have harddrives at all and just used flash memory sticks and whatnot. That was pretty quick and cheap.

You are thinking of SSDs (Solid State Drives).
I swear I came up with this idea (OP) like... 2 years ago... :3 I really should have acted on it, these guys must be making a fortune... ------------------------------------------------ I am not responsible for the above post, because apparently, my cat has learned how to type. :3 |

in other news wouldn't it be miles cheaper to just get a motherboard with a huge ram capacity and make a ram disk off that?

Could be feasible on a P45 chipset board. As far as I know, they're the only commercially available boards with more than 8GB capacity. I don't know if you could boot from it though, so it could be a bit pointless. ____________________

Strange that if you look down the list on the page that the OP posted, it's only ú175/$350 for the 16gb integral fitted flash drive. So why does the same amount of memory in the Hyperdive cost considerably more. Basically, they are the same internally but with a different connector.

you can't compare a SSD vs ramdisk
