Good day comrades I have just started as a Minmatar pilot looking to get into pvp. I was wondering if any other old salt pvpers could maybe lend me some advice on what direction I should train my character. Mainly I would like to know what skills I should focus on the maximize my chances to be a successful pvper. Any advice is welcome and thank you for your time.

Rifter for the time being. It's probably one of, if not the, solidest frigate available.
Stay in the Rifter for about two months. Once you start killing more than you lose, hop in a Rupture.

Old salt? I'm a PVPer not a poorly cooked steak .
Seriously though, the best thing you can do is find a good PVP training corp. Make sure the leader actually has a year or two of PVP experience. Some corps will claim to be "PVP training" but the CEO has been PVPing for like a month tops.
Edit: Like the person above says "start small/early and work your way up to bigger ships". Wait till you have a lot of experience and are flying a super expensive ship and you'll regret it. _______________

Focus on getting solid skilled Rifters and Ruptures, Rifters are a ton of fun and once your skills shape up you can punch well above your own size, especially with a friend or two.
Ruptures are excellent cruisers that can take a beating and dish it out as well.
Do what Duban says (he's sort of a legend in his own right) and tackle in your rifter for some good old well-meaning pyerites.

My advice is to find a decent corp (can always try eve uni or FW) and stick small, bigger is not better. Minmatar are best at tacklers and small fast ships so frigs, cruisers and destroyers are the way to go, possibly build up to a hurricane but if u stay in cruisers losses are much easier to replace.
Aside from that; use the bonuses of your ships, don't fly what you can't afford to lose, stay aligned, look for threads of ways to set up ships to get ideas (then after a few tries modify it to fit your fighting style) and join 'help' channel in game if u you have any questions.

Best advice I can give is to do what I did and jump into the action as soon as possible. I waited about a month before I started pvping (14 day trial + two weeks into real account playing), and although I started gallente (incursus tackler to start, and moved up to thorax for awhile) it is good to join an established pvp corp that is noobie friendly.

train up your speed skills, train for weapon upgrades, make sure you don't mix weapons, and get into a good PvP corp or join factional warfare!

im pretty sure mother ment dont mix weapon size and class. mixing different weapon systems turrets/missiles/drones is what we are all about.
eg. go all 200mm's or all 280mm's
Usefull ammo info : flavor/optimal adjustment/damage type
EMP -50 EM/EXP/KIN Phased - 37.5 THERM/KIN Fusion -25 EXP/KIN Tit -12.5 KIN/EXP
Depleted 0 EXP/KIN/THERM
proton +20 KIN/EM nuclear +40 EXP/KIN carbon +60 EXP/KIN
remember your optimals

* Fly Rifter and Rupture to get experience, cheap and good ships. * Mix learning trainings (if you havn't done it) with some basic combat skills and support (like basic gunnery, electronic, tank, and navigation skills). * Find a corp and/or alliance that does PvP, preferably in FW, low sec PvP or roaming 0.0.
As for skills/where-to-take-it-from-here, you will find out at this point what you enjoy doing and what you will want to do in the future. Good skills to invest in meanwhile is the support skills I mentioned (do some very basic drone and missile skills too, fast training that is nice to have done). Every ship you fly use 'em, no matter if you're new or a vet. Great stuff to have. And great stuff for you to do while finding out what you enjoy flying.

Train Caldari or Amarr.
Either you spam teh missiles or you tank like hell and still spam the missiles (in the good amarr boats and/or Drake).
------- CEO of Maids. No I didn't pick the name. I've grown rather fond of it though.Poor PR in progress!

Make sure you get your learning skills up too. This is a pain when you first start out but it does pay off.
Focus on getting all your gunnery and navigation skills up to lv 4 at least. Join a PvP corp, we have plenty of good pilot's who are willing to give advice (shameles plug).
When I first started out I focused on tackling in frigates and then interceptors for several months before I moved up to anything else.

Don't listen to that whiner. For my first 1,5-2 years in EVE, Amarr was considered the worst race. Remember the forum posts? "lol Amarr"?
I had faith in CCP and stayed with Amarr. Eventually things got better. Cross-training at young days will leave you frustrated as you're not really good at anything.
Plus, the irony is, while we can only speculate how things will be after the changes.. the minmatar ships that will do best will probably be their frig- and cruiser-sized ships. Rifter is and will be great. Their AF's might be the best AF's in the game, especially after the changes. In gangs the Vagabond and Rapier will still be really useful, albeit the Vaga won't be immortal and the Rapier will be target paining and webbing rather than dualwebbing. Might actually put you further away = higher survivability.
Either way, it's all specualation, the best way to fly is by flying the stuff you want to fly. Game balance is everflowing, and remember, crosstraining early is really bad. New shiptype to train, new weapon systems, etc. It's a huge timesink that doesn't really pay off until after some time played.
Get your basic support (engineering, electronics, base gunnery/drone/missile) up at first, with the learning skills. Then you'll know what to do. And do not listen to the bloody whiners that tells you to train race/ship X because it's sooo good. You won't be very happy when things flip over for another ship a bit later.
