Basically what I've been doing is salvaging wreaks that people have decided not to salvage. But I was wondering if I can use probes to get into the mission areas even when there's not a player in there.

Quick Answer - yes.
But I cant find the link right now to show you how to probe out others.
Do a search for Probe / Probing. I think that will bring it up.

No, you can't. There has to be either a missioner or some drones left in the mission area or it cannot be probed.
also, rofl at ninjaing being "griefing"

I agree. How is ninjaing griefing? The wrecks are gonna disappear anyway, so might as well make full use of them if noone else is (yes, I am a salvager).

So am I and I always ask before I salvage other peoples wrecks if someone is around (or in local). I' dont have any problem at all if the player or others from his corp are not around.

Its not griefing/ninja salvaging. I scan down drones all the time. If they are sitting in space and surrounded by wrecks I salvage AND loot all the named stuff. If the missioner shows up while I am still there I will jettison the loot.
Its griefing if and only if I salvage while the guy is still there in the hopes that he attacks me, then I come back with a ship that will kill him. I have not done that since its better money to just scan down the drones and look for the salvage as well.
In the last 7 days I've pulled in well over 80 T2 drones averaging about 375,000 a pop with mediums and lights, no T2 heavies this week :(
Easily 100mil in salvage and loot. All the time no one showed up so finders keepers.

If someone shoots you while looting and you defend yourself, that's not "Griefing" that's self defense.

Personally I just see salvagers as a risk I've got to accept if I'm going to be running missions, particularly around the crowded areas. ... Still, warping out and aggroing battleship rats on their little ships has worked pretty well in getting rid of them so far.

I'd go even further; those vile mission runners deprive you of your fun ingame, I'd petition them for griefing.

Depending on your ship setup for salvage, someone shooting at you can be considered a bonus
After all, mission ship fits can be quite lucrative and they tend to fit specific damage types, so opportunity to exploit 'holes' in fits.
Salvage is salvage. I could never understand the problem with someone probing out the mission site and warping in to salvage wrecks. In all my missioning, I have never had a ninja salvager appear [
Take care, Arithron
