anyone else play EVE on a laptop, but cant participate in fleet fights now? ive been able to participate in some pretty big battles, with minimal lag, but ive been fighting up north, and its "grid load...grid load...grid load...loaded grid...lag...lag.. .lag...crash...wake up in clone.."
i cant afford any new upgrades for my laptop, but i was wondering if anyone had any tips to increase my performance...
i no longer run iTunes while eve is running, all effects, are off, graphics are at the worst settings...but the odd thing is, is that ive been fighting in bigger fights (re: R-6 with SACK VS Russians, Geminate with RK VS GoonSwarm and other fights) and they've been lag free, this is without stacklessIO..but with it it seems my PC just wants to commit suicide... Linkage to DXDIAG
ive been thinking about increasing the RAM as well....any tips would be appreciated.

Increase memory to 2 GB, 1 GB really is too low since trinity especially when you are running Vista. XP and 1 GB should not be a problem. Also throw away those thousands of logfiles and defrag. - - -

Ugh. I'm having similar issues, but I think I have a failing hard drive.
Even a 30 v 30 fight reduces my machine to a slideshow sometimes.
Anyway....
Lots of RAM helps. If you have 4 Gigs or more, make a ramdrive and put your eve cache folder on there.
Eve doesn't scale up well on multi-core cpus. If you have a CPU with 'Hyperthreading', try turning it off. I've seen lots of cpu-intensive apps do better without it.
Defrag your hard drive regularly. The less the actuator arm in the drive has to move, the better performance you should get.
In closing: I know where you live.

thanks for the help. as for defragging, my PC actually LOOSES HD space, instead of gaining, and im not too sure how to throw away the log files...

Oh yeah:
BRACKETS
Try having all brackets turned off on an overview tab, then once you load grid you can switch to a different overview.
Should help lots with gridload times. |

Everyone else mentioned the best ideas. Have you noticed your laptop overheating at all? My laptop can overheat to the point of where I can practically cook bacon on the keyboard, and my FPS drops tremendously (this is with effects, sound, other unnecessary applications turned off). If you notice this problem, grab a cheap laptop fan base for $15.

grid load is NOT RELATED TO THE CLIENT! Its a SERVER issue!!!! HAs been explained several times including by CCP in the appropriated forums.
Client lag is the , thinks move slowly and in slide show type of lag.
Not loading is a server issue. ------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough

No it's really not.
Many laptops don't have the GPU or CPU to support a bajillion ships on screen. It's not server related at all.

I play on a laptop and it can support battles up to 500 strong with ship brackets still on (drones, wrecks, and other stuff like that turned off) without lag at all. When the numbers start to increase above that, well, module lag results but it is still pretty decent.

You have three problems with your system. All of them are related to the video chip:
Your computer has 1 gb RAM. While this is more than Vista demands, your video chip allocates some of this RAM for use as video memory. When you have lots of stuff on screen, the ammount of memory dedicated to the video chip increases, at the same time as EVE itself wants more memory for tracking all those ships. Upgrading to 2 gb should improve performance a little.
The Intel GMA 950 is not intended as for gaming. While the GMA chips have much higher performance compared with previous generations of integrated graphics, they have a hard time keeping up with discrete video sollutions, like those from ATI and nVidia. The fill rate is OK (especially considering that the GMA 9x0 has hardware HSR), but the lack of dedicated video memory makes memory bandwidth into a big problem. This becomes even more apparent when you bring pixel shading into the picture.
As if this weren't enough, the GMA 950 cannot handle vertex shading on it's own. Instead, it relies on the CPU to handle vertex calculations for it. On faster CPUs this isn't a problem, but a Celeron will unfortunately have a hard time keeping up.
There really isn't much you can to to increase performance. The widescreen-option in EVE gives the client a little less to render. Lowering the resolution and color depth will increase performance, but decrease image quality.
In-game, removing brackets makes a huge difference, especially in fleet battles.
Also, try to get some more RAM. 1 gb simply isn't enough for a Vista system with shared video memory.

i plan on getting two more gigs of RAM, as my pc has two DDR2 RAM slots, for 3 gigs of ram. and thanks for all the replies, im still tinkering with the brackets, as im trying to get them ALL removed, instead of just what i leave on the OVerview bracket'd

lol...mostly gbc pilots in this tread ?
I have the same issue. Have been in alot of huge fleetfights before with only the usually gridlag and stuff. But in the large battles afther the hamsteruppgrades it usually turns out to be a slideshow . And that is with brakets sorted....

Seems your system has System Restore activated. Turn it off and you will gain back the harddisk space lost, when Sytem Restore made incremental backups to your system.
To turn System Restore off read here : http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/f0688925-5abe-4caf-b49a-018f8cfcaf4d1033.mspx
Plus, you will not lose harddisk space everytime you defrag. (Why does it do this? Well, its because System Restore will try to create some files whenever the defragger runs )
There is a downside to this though: You will lose the safety net of System Restore :(

I just want to point out, that anything over 3.2(ish) GB of memory on a 32 bit OS is a waste.
If you're going to upgrade your Memory and you have money to burn, go for two 1GB sticks and two 500MB sticks. Make sure you slot them correctly too, bearing dual channel issues in mind.
Alternatively upgrade to a 64 bit OS and crank it up to 8GB Removed. Please keep your EVE signature related to your EVE persona and not that of a real life politician. Navigator |
