One of the best suggestions I have seen was being able to see the name of the ships when you moved your pointer over them. Anyway one of my corp mates just got a new cruser so we started tring to come up with a fitting name. This got me to thinking, how many other ppl have actually named their ships?
OH forgot mine:
Condor: "Shrubbery"
Burst: "Hummingbird
Probe: "Risky Business"
Atron: "Rusty Dagger"
ImI: "Mule"
Nav: "My Mule"
Bat: "Rust Bucket2"
Badger "On Angel's Wings"
Horder1: "Gold Digger"
Horder2: "Gray Goose"
Merlin: "Echo Echo"
Rifter: "Dung Flinger"
Trist: "Broad Sword"
Scythe1: "Angel's Scream"
Scythe2: "Widow's Tears"

just a few i guess
since others cant see it theres no point of naming them...
same goes to avatars.. altho you can see the names players actually almost never going to see your avatars pic...
very dissapointin if ya ask me :(

I haven't given my Moa a name yet but to me it looks like a cross between Godzilla and a Turkey. So maybe Turkzilla?

Moa looks more like a goose than a turkey (it would look like a moa if it didn't have the side engine and the feet went down...)

and when I get my Scorp, it'll be Narusegawa.
(They're all named after my favorite anime characters.)

I have many names that are so esoteric that I won't even list them here... but I always name my best ship "Greenspan" and I have named my best Moa "Moa Money".

With apologies to Iain M. Banks, my Incursus has the name "Big Stick Diplomacy" and my Atron is the "Attitude Adjuster". My two Iteron indys are the "Get Out And Push" and the "Long Time Coming".
