I've just got the game and I want to go straight down the combat route. Is there a good/bad race for that? What should I set my starting stats at?

High Perception for Weapon and ship training. You can use the eve-i starter tool to check out diffrent paths trough the char creation. It will show you what skills and attributes you end up with.
Starter Tool I would pick these settings ---------------------------

Make sure on a new character you train all 6 Learning skills to level 3 soon, this will influence your other skills progression. In addition, if you are going to hunt NPC Pirates, train Social skill and Connections soon, they influence the rate at which you obtain better agents.

To the guy that wanted a combat character:
Perception is most imoprtant, yes - but I would trade my high willpower for a higher int score any day.
The pure combat skills (turrets/ships) are prec/will - but there are also sooo many engineering/electronics skills that you are going to want to train (and that are going to need to train), so DO NOT neglect your int score, mkay?

yes for goodnes sake dont forget these very important skills... it can mean you being able to fit an extra gun on your ship, or using a shield modifiyer that saves your life... Just the biggest guns dont cut the mustard in eve, you need a good base of engineering and electronics. You neglect these, you WILL come across a player who has a the skills to just squash you like an insect.

For a pure combat character, I would say that the skills by order are:
1. Perception 2. Intelligence 3. Willpower 4. Memory 5. Charisma
As was stated above, you will eventually want electronic and engineering skills and these all depend on your intelligence. If I was to do it again, I'd max out perception, have good intelligence and willpower. A reasonable memory and as little charisma as possible. I hate that I put the one point into charisma

So if I just allocated my skill points randomly (I didn't put anything into intelligence), I should just start again, or doesn't it make a big difference?

I have had excellent luck with a Sebestior character. The starting stats were all 8s with a 7 in charisma. Skill times were slower on average, but consistent throughout and very versatile.
