I am in the printing industry and ran something of for myself and i like it alot..
some pictures can be found; http://www.real-creative.co.uk/dump/map_preview.jpg http://www.real-creative.co.uk/dump/Image053.jpg
(sorry for the lack of quality will get more later on)
this is just a test post to see what kind of feedback and if people would be interested in this sort of thing for sale??
i will keep the updates as up to date as possible on the alliance maps, i am also working on a giant star map.
we can also produce your own images onto canvas material (maybe even framing service if price is right!)
i am also working on some "caldari" "Amarr" "Gallente" "mimnitar" drop banners which look nice, will get some pics shortly.
anyone out there interested in something like these????
Cheers, S Tein

Interesting.
I have been thinking of having something like the alliance map or the star map printed at a local print shop, but never got further than the first thought.
What would the costs be for (for instance) the alliance map shown on your photograph? Would it be workable internationally or would I be better off finding a professional locally?
I wouldnt know about racial banners, I myself are more interested in things containing more useful information at a glance.
There are a number of things available at the moment, like the strategic maps sold through the eve store. I however do not care much for those since they are more glossy than practical. Also, buying stuff from that shop is not very interesting due to import charges. I use ombey's pdf maps myself since they can easily be printed and scribbled upon. But a one-off large map does sound very interesting to me.

Here is the most important question:
Why would I want to buy a static map, that is
1.) Available to anyone to print out for free + their cost of printing.
2.) Not a static situation.

Good point, maybe the OP's choice of the alliance map isnt the best example, but how about the galaxy in its entirety? The format proposed would allow for a version with all system names in place without losing out on readability. I have a plan of the city i live in on a wall behind my desk, would be very nice to have one of new eden next to it for reference.

exactly. that's what i want. a large scale map, like the one you get with f10 but on a perpendicular view, with every sistem name and color(by sec status), with the links ofc. ------------------------------- Kill, loot, salvage!!111!!! |

Crikey! that would be very large indeed. Although VERY cool.
I have similar Star wars maps as those.

It will solve problem #2 with the minor exception of new outposts.
However, it really doesn't answer #1. I know that we have seen in the past though, that people will buy what they can get already for free though. To use an example, I printed out a decent sized, A3, maps of 0.0 for no more than about $2 worth of ink.

As if to highlight the point, the map you printed there is about 5 or 6 months out of date

If he can make it interesting over the bother of getting it done locally i would. Also, afaik a good universe map, with all the system names, suitable for large print is not available atm.
A3 is pretty small to be honest. The format in the OP's photo (maybe in a landscape orientation) would be a lot better if you want all that info. If an A3 map were really practical to me i'd have made a print at work.

It is small, but each one is A3 in a mosaic so it is four A3 sized pieces of 0.0. Because there just isn't any reason or room for me to have a bigger one. So I guess it's roughly 44"x68".
I thought about printing a really huge one, like 48"xa lot. But then I thought, "really? "
However, for the mere price of $1,500, I will paint you a wall sized oil painting of the Eve map.

Hehe, lemme guess - that doesnt include a ticket to europe :p
I'll wait for someone to come up with a more practical solution... OP?

It comes with having a handmade work of art that it unique in its existence. I should point out that in the art world anything under $3,000 is considered "affordable." Oil Paints aren't cheap you know.

Oh very aware, but I am looking for printed map, not a work of art

Edited by: S Tein on 06/11/2008 19:26:10 judging by the above comments it seems alliance maps are not everyone's cup of coffee.
i am working on a 3 X 3 (metre) GALAXY map as shown in the F10 menu and this seems to be the better option, this can be printed at other sizes also.
we also have a variety of materials to consider, the map in picture above is on a canvas type material, but i can print on ANYTHING!!!! so i was thinking maybe a glossy PVC type map, so you could draw with a marker and erase after use...?!
i could ship internationally without any problems but i would need to double check pricing, but for now i have a ball park figure of ú45 GBP + Shipping but this all depends on what quality/materials you would require. i know there must be hundreds of people after a similar sized map.???
thos who print on A3 paper then thats fine for you, i am aiming more towards those who want to hang it of the wall, not just for practical use but for asthetics also.
will work on this project more over the weekend and get something printed up early next week and show you some pictures and hopefully have more details for you all.
untill then lets keep this discussion going so i can find out what else others may be interested in. S Tein

THAT sounds like a seriously good idea.
3x3 meter i gather would be too large to be practical, at least for me, half or a 3rd of that would be something i'd actually have a wall for :)
45 pounds seems a bit much (what does that come to? like 70 euros?), although maybe not when put in perspective to materials used and the one-off character of the thing.
really interested in what you'll come up with! thread BM'd

45 would be for 3x3 i guess so if you wanted it half or 3rd of that size then obviously the cost would drop, the PVC material isnt as cheap as the canvas either, but for now the 45 is a ball park figure as i dont wanna give anyone an exact amount yet untill i can work it out exactly.
also gotta look into issues regarding CCP copyright etc....

What would be more useful (if less decorative) would be a large format Ombey style map, except with all the regions. I believe Ombey has that at the back of his PDF. The PDF is locked though so you cant edit it, but it is vector - so handier memory wise and sharper. Maybe ask Ombey if hes interested in letting you have an unlocked version of that page. You could flip the colours then.

Not really in the market for another map product, but will give you one piece of advice: Selling CCP intellectual property without their ok would be... unwise.
