Hi. I've been grinding missions for a while now and haven't really being paying attention to my standings. Can someone tell me how far your standings have to drop before you can no longer enter another factions space. For example my standings with the Caldari State are sitting at -4.38 and -3.70 with the Amarr Empire. When it reaches a certain level, what happens, are you just not allowed through a gate in to their space, or can you go through but get popped as soon as you do? Second question' Is ratting the quickest way to raise your standings with a faction. If so, is just flying from belt to belt blowing up rats the best way?

To raise standings quickly, do the COSMOS mission sets for the race concerned.
If you standings are too low, and you enter space controlled by that empire, you will be targeted for destruction as an enemy of the Empire! Pods won't be, however...
Hope that helps, Arithron Vote Arithron for CSM! Check out my thread: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=899358 |

Ratting will not rise your faction standings at all. It will only rise your security standings. To rise faction standings you need to do storyline missions for that faction or for a faction that is in high standings with that faction.

Thanks for the info. Just how low do you need to go before your popped at the gates?

IIRC, -5.0. There's the social skill "diplomacy ou can train to partially fix low standings, too.

I am Gallente, but would it be possible to run missions (avoiding any that involve Gallente) for a Caldari agent to raise my standings with them? My only real concern is that I end up not being able to get to Jita

yes, you can run missions for e.g. the Caldari Navy and the storylines that you get will raise your standing with, in this case, Caldari.

Would it only be the storyline missions which would raise my standings with the Caldari State, or would the "general" missions I get from a Caldari agent raise them as well? If not would it be a bit like: run 16 or so level one missions, revieve a story line mission, finish it then get a standings increase? Sorry for asking so many stupid questions, I really should of paid more attention to this side of things from the start

I'm not sure of the value, but I think you cannot run missions if you get below -2 with the faction. But you can train Diplomacy to fix them to be sufficiently high to have access to missions.
Note that rising caldari/amarr standings WILL impact your gallente/minmatar standings.

Faction standings are from storyline missions. Or COSMOS missions (but you can do the COSMOS missions only once).
You may also want to check out the datacenter missions. Especially if you prefer to "buy" your standings (actually: buy the needed tags).

Thanks for all the info. It looks like there are several options available to me, so things should work out ok. Thanks again.

I was thinking ... you may want to actually work with Amarr, not Caldari, if you care of Gallente standings more than Minmatar.
This is for two reasons:
1) Normal (non storyline) missions for Caldari will often be against Gallente (therefore you could loose some Gallente standings even without getting any Caldari), while Amarr will most probably be against Minmatar.
2) When you do storylines you will gain more Caldari standings, compared to the Gallente standings you loose, when doing Amarr storylines. Granted it will take you longer to rise your Caldari standings. But it will also save you more in terms of Gallente standings. If you run a storyline for Caldari, for each 10% gain with Caldari you'll loose 5% for Gallente. Doing Amarr, for each 10% you get for Amarr, you'll also get 7% with Caldari, and only loose 2% with Gallente.
note: the above %tages are to be applyed to the difference between standing 10 and current standing, therefore the higher your current standing the more absolute points you gain/loose for each %.

Thanks Ami that sounds like the way to go. I jumped into Amarr space a couple of hours ago to buy the diplomacy skill you mentioned (now training to level 3) so I'll have a look about and see if I can get an agent close to where I'm based. Thanks again.

You need to be above -2 standings to be able to work for a faction agent: that's where the Diplomacy skill will help you. Connections will help you once you get to positive standings (you'll notice that when your real standing goes from negative to positive, your effective standing will actually decrease if you have high Diplomacy but low Connections because the former only improves your negative standings while the other only the positive standings).
Once you are above -2 no need to look around: use the universe map (setting it to color stars by your available agents).
Alternatively check eve-agents or the agent DB on eveinfo.
And for future reference you want to read Akita T's guide to making ISK. Especially the addendum posts (number 33 and 34) she made on page 2. And of course keep browser bookmark on the EON cross-standing tables she links to in post 33.

On the subject of standings how many storyline missions do you have to do to get up to 0.5 with your faction? In two months of playing I've only had one as I'm beginning to dislike grinding missions, and my standing with Minmatar is only 0.03 after that one mission. I'd like to try the FW for a little consensual pvp but having to get to 0.5 seems like it'll take forever!

You get a storyline mission after every 16 completed missions (of the same level). You'll need maybe a dozen low-level storyline missions to get your faction standing up to 0.5.

Train your Social skill up and you'll get more standing for each mission (including faction standing for storyline missions).
You should get a storyline offer (check your mail) for each 16 normal missions you do (at a given level). It may take a while to get the offer, once you completed the 16th mission, however.

That's what I was trying to avoid, running hundreds of missions just to be able to get into FW. In my minds eye this totally defeats the object of giving new players like me FW as a means of gaining some fair pvp experience, instead we get to spend hundreds of hours grinding missions.
However I asked in my newbie corp channel and was pointed to a wiki called the 'path to acceptance' or something similar. In a couple of hours doing Datacentre missions my Minamatar and Gallente standings are at 0.3. Just a couple more sessions and I'll be able to splurge my isk on faction warfare
