This is me, on the right. I dressed up for Fanfest 2008, as I did for FF '07. Note the (hopefully) striking resemblance to the character portrait.
Fanfest is where Eve players have been convening, once per year, to talk about their favorite game.
So I can't quite understand why some of these players would tell me that they can't understand why I would want to dress up.
Some told me I was particularly geeky for doing so, going to the lengths that I did. Guilty as charged.
A few, however, suggested that Eve Fanfest is not a place to dress up, that I should instead change the makeup around a bit and go to a Tolkienesque MMOG con instead. *coffBlizzconcoff*
To whom I would say, you're in a role-playing game, not doing any actual role-playing, but instead focusing on maximum skill points to the exclusion of all else. And this makes you different from a Tolkienesque RPG addict with 27 maxlevel characters how?
Understand that I'm not bitter; there are many ways to play these games. Max SP characters are fine, nothing wrong with that. There are many play styles possible with the game. But I like to role-play, and I really enjoy dressing up for Fanfest. I like to think I resemble my character, after putting time and money into my dress.
So, if you don't dress up or RP, don't trash the ones who do. And all you non-RP'ers can bite my brilliant white Matari tattooed ass if you still don't like it.

I think dressing up for that should be mandatory, of course you could come as anything, some duct taped grillbars and you're a Tempest, all black sucking down every beer that gets within reach and you're a black hole but by all means let the freakshow be about the freaks.
At least you got some nicelooking female going along with your scheme, can't be all bad.

SPeaking of which, they better allow a wide variety of body types. I am tired of the skinniest character you can make in any game being an average looking guy and the fattest character looking like the average guy with a very slight beer gut.
If I want to be a morbidly obese behemoth sleezeball marketing guy or a sickly annorexic freak scientist - that should be my choice.

"... well, guys don't dress/make up, gays might." "I have nothing against either"
You obviously have one big disgusting chunk of prejudice against gays, which you'll have to work with.
What has sexuality to do with dressing up for a fanfest? Gawd, people use the word gay for everything these days...

Google Cosplay, note the equal mix of male and female enthuesists.
Its not very popular in western culture, but im sure when CCP finally release their whitewolf mmorpg youll see alot more players arriving at fanfests representing their favorite charatcers.

I don't like and have never understood RP or cosplay; I think it's weird.
However, there's no such thing as a boring costume party. Dressing up is great fun for a night out. But everyone has to do it.
I would wholeheartedly endorse mandatory costumes for fanfest.
And to mister 'gays might' above, you are a tool. Might want to leave Mom's basement from time to time and see what the adults are doing.

And you "man" are an idiot... I happen to enjoy wearing suits. I typically go out in them when I get off.
Here's an Idea: Try LIVING in a battle uniform 85% of the year. Having something that looks nice and presents you well isn't gay, it's professional and... dare I say... Manly?
Imagine that. Obviously your opinion on what the "majority" of guys feel is wrong, or the majority of your guy friends are all overly homophobic.

I cant see why people would have a problem with you being dressed up at Fanfest. If you love the game go to fanfest and want to dress up do it, and everyone should be able to have a laugh and not be so up-tight about it.

Edited by: Itoria on 12/11/2008 17:45:36 Kudos to you, OP
I spent the final party at FF dressed as a pirate (anyone see us or got pics? Nice to see how some of the shots came out? :p) and generally had a really good reception. We ran around ransoming people for beers - surprisingly, with some success.
Of course, me and my mate weren't exactly roleplaying, and pirates aren't *strictly* eve-content but hey, whatever goes, right? We had a laugh and some top class looks of surprise.
I'm considering making a proper Minmatar costume for next year, if I go, and if I don't spend the whole weekend wearing it would certainly do so at the final party. I mess around in the roleplay side of it, and guess I'd definatly RP more in eve of my alliance weren't quite so real-world!
Top marks to people who make the effort, I say, and screw what the other people think. It's you're own choice and I reckon no-one should be able to bring you down if that's what you enjoy doing with your time.
And yes, to be honest, dressing up is only a little ste[ further from flying halfway across the world for a video game, lets face it :p
PS: Me and my mate at FF, I'm the girl in the middle :)

I don't mind people dressing up, their choice. But I wouldn't do it (unless it's halloween, then my pirate costume comes out of the closet). But in a place where almost none (exept people who get paid) are dressed out, it does seem a bit corny, especially since it's stricly game-related and -I'm-all-trying-too-look-like-my-character.
The poster above me did have a good idea since she and her friend dressed out to pirates, wich is a more casual costume that people are more used too but at the same time relates to the game itself.
Honestly, if you were Gallente, running around with a bag of baguettes would be enough. :)
But yet again, it's your choice and if you are happy with it, then do it. _____________________________ Entering the Intergalactic Summit forum is like walking into a Startrek convention; All you'll see is a bunch of nerds and you'll go "WTF?" |

How did your experience go?
The Minmatar have an interesting population problem due to their belief that Duck Tape, the thing mighty enough to keep their engines strapped to their pressurized skips, is strong enough to double as a contraceptive.
Maybe if they stopped eating it to do this it would be a mite more successful
EDIT - to the OP I am now considering going as my main toon as opposed to casual with a T-Shirt with the symbol of Haruhiism on my back

Thank you to all who responded, with positive and negative feedback alike - it's a work in progress. I really do appreciate the support.
It's not everyone's cup of tea, and I think that's perfectly fine. For what it's worth, this is the first time I have *ever* done a costume for anything at all. I used to hate Halloween and cosplaying until just before FF '07. Really.
The female Minnie in the pic was one of the bartenders for the party. She's the one on the right in this photo.
Originally by: Tiirae To the OP: for god's sake you could at least have shaved. You don't look *anything* like your avatar with that fungus on your chin.
On that I was torn. To a limited extent I agree, but I'm loath to part with the chin hair. I think it'll come off next year though.
Originally by: Itoria I spent the final party at FF dressed as a pirate (anyone see us or got pics?...
We should have gotten Eve TV to snap pics of us while we were getting interviewed, argh. It was good to share the stage with you guys, you looked great in your piratey gear! There were pirates at the FF '07 party too, so you are not the first by any means.
Originally by: Tam Althor Personally I would not be caught dead looking like my avatar.... but looking at him it's easy to see why :)
His hairdo is a bit odd, but you could have whatever hairdo you like and say he's going to a different barber now, I suppose. His facial tattoos would probably be easy to put on.
Originally by: LordSwift Oh and static zero, hit me up in game enjoyed chatting to you. its Chris
Will do! Great talking to you as well
Originally by: RU Sirius Lots of people dug your costume, and there were at least 4 Amarians there too, who didn't look as cool as you did.
deleted for brevity (and not for lack of appreciation)
Nice to meet you again this year and no doubt see you in 2009.
I think the Amarrians would have been all right if the robes touched the floor, hehe. Thank you for explaining the composition of the costume and I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to talk very much! I was getting pulled away by photo ops, and you were getting pulled away by Star Fraction, and we never got a chance to chat much. Glad to see you made it home all right, and please say hello to C if you get a chance.

I was talking to someone about costuming a female Gallente pilot, maybe it was with LordSwift. I'm thinking you'd have to use a lot of hard, clear polycarbon plastic. Maybe take a full face shield from a motorbike helmet, and cut it up in the pattern of your character's plastic shield. A bit of eye makeup, glittery lipstick and you'd have it. Maybe gray vinyl for the shirt. I'm not sure what Gallenteans would wear for bottoms though... hmmm
This post is now way too long ... thank you all again

Originally by: Danton Marcellus It's the very thought of a suit that makes me squirm, the uniform, the suppression of self, the urge to walk straight, kick high and raise the arm in a roman salute. [:ugh:
Well that's your own prejudices you're feeling. I've spent about 5 years in a job where I had to wear a suit, and the other 15 years of my working life I've been able to wear whatever I want.
I tell you, I do miss the suit from time to time. You feel sharp, you have more confidence, chicks dig it. Of course, I'm talking about a *good* suit, tailored, with good quality shoes, belt, tie, etc. If you wear cheap stuff it doesn't have the same effect. Also needs to be contemporary, a 10-year-old suit doesn't get the girls wet like a modern one does.
It becomes a drag when you have to wear a suit every day, you grow to despise ironing, you get stains on your nice shirts, and everything looks worn out. That sucks. But as an occasional thing, a good suit simply cannot be beat for feeling that you are better than everyone else!
Anyway, the idea that by wearing a suit you lose your individuality and become some sort of robot is just dumb and is perpetuated by people who have no clue about looking good.

I think people who wear suits look awful and dated and lack any form of style myself. Maybe suits don't suddenly turn you into a brain washed robot, but they're certainly not thinking outside the box.

Here's the problem, Tiirae. Of course a suit makes you seem better than everyone else - everyone except every other office drone out there, that is. I completely agree that a well-fitted suit can be very comfortable indeed, but needing one to feel confident? That's just sad.

What concerns me more is the hot chick on the left, couldn't you have got rid of Oddjob in the centre there and got a little closer to her?

Men in suits isn't dressed up? Don't come and tell me the suit is comfortable and something you'd rather wear than anything else.
Well I've been wearing a suit at work for almost 15 years now and I can tell you suit is a comfortable if you get used to it and more importantly buy the right suit.
With dressing up I don't mean dressing up in a suit but dressing up like something from outer space (hihi). FIREBALL FIREBALL!
