As with the last big expansion, it's heralded with some strikingy visual videos. Unfortunately the focal point of this latest one is completely counter to the mechanics (the very core rules) if the game.
last time it was an Abaddon BS discharging a doomsday type weapon which anihillated a capital fleet.
This time it's ships coming through a Cyno field that don't have the capability to. The first ship through the 'Military experts are calling this a Cynosaural field' is a Brutix, of all things! In the Federation fleet ramping up their DD (at least this time it's a Titan proper) are a host of sub-capitals that came through the cyno field... and none of them were covert ops (Notably visible were Hyperion BS, Brutix BC, and Tristan frigates).
Granted, the videos are intended to be visually appealing to the non-eve masses, but as with any ex-military person watching a war movie, we Eve regulars are left shaking our heads at the patent consistancy breaks.
Please, Devs, if you're going to make these interesting little videos, keep with your own game mechanics? After all, I can't introduce a hack to fire a DD with my BS.

Um, maybe the jump bridge capability of a titan did that?

A titan pops a bridge open and anything close to it can jump through. (atleast, that's how I think it works) Doesn't need to be a capital ship.

No no, it only LOOKS as if they fly from the cynofield, when they actually flew THROUGH the cynofield.
Also, military experts call that "abaddon doomsday device" a "work in progress" turret.

Shouldn't that be called the "rust remover" since it was a Matari Capital fleet that got popped?
(I know that it was a reverse engineered Terran energy weapon, but still...)

You almost got it right.
In reality it works like this: - Titan pilot moves close to the edge of the POS shields slowly - people get told to warp to it at 10Km and not activate MWD - people start bumping the Titan left and right (and from behind when there are spies) and lots of cursing and hilarity on TS ensues - Cyno pilot fires the cyno - Titan opens jump bridge - people who are within range (1500m or 2500m, I keep forgetting) can jump through the jump bridge, of course there's always a bunch who didn't get in range, are desynced etc. ...

The irony is strong in this thread. One of the hilarious bits about that part in the video was that "military experts are calling this a cynosaural field" thing. While it's initially funny, it makes a lot of sense.
In an RP sense, the average citizen of New Eden has probably never seen one of them outside of news footage, in much the same way that the average person IRL hasn't seen a nuke explode with their own eyes. Which... would be dumb anyway, but that's just an example to illustrate the point.
The ironic bit is that the average EVE player hasn't seen one either, much less a jump bridge.
The only real consistency issue in the videos these days is between the videos and the actual game client's capabilities. :)
Originally by: Meiyang Lee Shouldn't that be called the "rust remover" since it was a Matari Capital fleet that got popped?
That would explain why the ships disintegrated from it. :)

As if the titan would have the cargo capacity to carry the fuel for 1/10th of that fleet, or even 1/100th.
They called it a Cyno, and since the JB has the same visual I guess I can conceed the confusion. The diologue could have been done a little better in that regard but... *shrug* It just blew the entire imersion factor while watching the (all too short) video when a Brutix comes slowboating through the field.
Also notice that none of the Amarrans fired on the Orca desperately trying to align?

As Winterblink correctly mentions above: this was news footage, the average civilian inhabitant of the EVE universe has probably never seen a capital ship before, let alone a Cyno or Jumpbridge.

You only need fuel to activate the bridge, not to let a single ship go trough it... Saint unlocked my sig!!! For this I will buy her unlimited amounts of Beer at FF!

Well first off it is a news agency, think about it.
They will say and do anything as long as they have a sensational story.
It is proven every time I attempt to watch the evening news.
To be fair there are still some news stations that aren't that bad.

You only need fuel to activate the bridge, not to let a single ship go trough it...
ie: it's not a fuel-guzzler like the Black Ops version. (But then again, the ship firing it costs a tiny bit more )

The Abaddon weapon wasn't a DD. That sequence was visualizing the climatic battle in "The Empyrean Age" novel and the weapon was a cobbled together "terran artifact" discovered in a deadspace pocket in 0.0 space. So while not "in-game" it IS prime fiction for backstory. Personally I would love it if EVE's battles looked like that. We're not far from that now, but the explosions and "cinema" of that scene was amazing.
The cyno of non cap ships is also part of that same 'prime fiction', but capsuleers are generally not capable of doing so per backstory due to Concord/government imposed restrictions in high-sec space. The non cap part? Well, Concord kicks our ass with classified tech. So why the stretch here with an Imperial power having the capability?
The gallente GOVERNMENT cyno'd in their fleet. Notice that the rogue Amarrian forces....did not.
Methinks there be a tempest in a teapot here in regard to the 'ohnoes' factor.

I liked the trailer, although the commentary was annoying, almost like trying too hard to get us excited. We see a cyno, and the narrator has to tell us "OOOH CYNO!! LOOK CYNO!! ISN'T TIHS TRAILER COOL?".. then later on, when the Erebus (?!) appears, "OOH! TITAN!! LOOK! TITAN!!". I mean it looked really good. Those capital hybrids made me really really want to train for a Moros (?!) or something.. and the combat scale was grand. I loved it, but that narrator annoyed me. I half expected her to go "OOH WHAT'S THAT SHIP THERE? COULD IT BE THAT NEW ORE CAPITAL SHIP?". Scope viewers have also seen an Cyno when they broadcasted the Minmatar/Thukker Fleet entering Yulai, and that was handled so tastefully. Why did they have to provide such an over-the-top commentary as if providing service for the physically impaired?
It's also more suitable as a side-trailer, in the same way the other two Scope videos were used during Empyrean Age, and have a real trailer. It doesn't quite have a trailer feel to it, nothing philosophical, no overall feel, no big picture or wide coverage of all races.. just a single event between two fleets. I noticed at the beginning it was labeled "teaser trailer" in the webpage, but later on, as time passed and I kept returning to the page to check for the real trailer, they suddenly removed the word "teaser". I suspect they have another one in store, or at least had, and this one was meant to be an initial teaser, which is precisely what it feels like. Trailers normally cover a lot of ground, and Empyrean Age's weak spot came when they focused too much, in the last few scenes, on a single battle. This one spends the entire length of the trailer on one episode in Solitude, and while it is of very good quality for a teaser (other than the annoying narrator) it's a big anti-climax compared to the majesty of the Trinity trailer, the adrenaline of the Revelations trailer, and the feel of the Exodus and Revelations II trailers.

Hahahaha guess I must have been dreaming every time my Mega jumped to a cyno with the help of a titan. If you're going to complain about something you should at least make sure YOU are a military expert or The Scope's military experts will make you look stupid.

I loose my immersion when:
- I have 4 clients open, and memory capacity makes background white and laggy - I see the skybox without the animation when warping - When I turn of my computer, and need to clean up the room ----------------- Destiny is not a matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It's not a thing to be waited for - it is a thing to be achieved. |
