Just pick one and go with it... this whole 'tell me what is best so I can train for it and then whine when it gets nerfed' mentality sucks, don't get into it.
BTW, the patch I think you are talking about has already gone through, so any changes that may be coming down the road are unknown.

It is not as simple as saying 'this one is better'...
Lasers, even pulse lasers, are longer range weapons, while blasters are up close 'punch them in the face'.
If you are simply asking about dps, well, blasters have more dps, but do so at point-blank range, where lasers give you more room to play in but have less dps. It is really a matter of how you want to play, not what is better/best.
As for 'big pvp engagements', with blasters you have to get into range, so that is time wasted where a laser user will already have a few volleys off and you are still moving into engagement range.
All of this, (in my opinion) really boils down to a matter of preference. do you like to fight up close and personal, or have a bit of distance to work in.

From a practical perspective, I've found that blasters can be very hard to get in close enough to do enough damage depending on how many opponents you face. The range with pulse lasers lets you start doing damage earlier in the process. With the nano nerf, this MWD isn't as effective so it may actually be hampering blaster boats but I haven't tried one since the patch.
For reference I'm a gallente char that cross trained amarr. I'm currently working on T2 amarr cruisers. I haven't bothered with T2 gallente cruisers because I don't have much love for them.

Neither, the pilot is the deciding factor.
As far as utility, I think a point could be made for carrying less "ammo" if you like to stay out for long periods. In a blaster or autocannon frigate, most of the cargo hold can easily be taken up by ammo.
You also need to define which lasers you're talking about. Since you said blasters, I assume you want to compare pulse lasers. My impression is that the lasers seem to track a tad better than the equivalent blasters, but the blasters do a wee bit more damage per shot. Hard to judge.
In any PvP encounter you will have multiple ships that will work ( one always hopes ) as a team, and individual weapon systems shortcomings will be covered by group abilities.
You'll eventually train them all, so don't worry about it. Pick the ship that looks the best and makes the prettiest explosions.
Autocannons ftw, btw.

Being capable of firing both up to large varients, i say just train both and test them yourself.
I personally like lazers for their low ammo need and their better range for the short range version,
But I like blasters for their good damage capability.
Either way both are good weapon systems and both cover the niches they need to cover. So use each one where they work best, blasters for the face to face work, and lazers for the midrange but not quite long range work.
But this is all my opinion so all i can do is offer advice. When going to a party with wine, women, and song. Always acertain the vintage of the first two. |

The problem comparing lasers with blasters, like it's been said, is that lasers are medium/long range, and blasters are extreme short range (and high(er) DPS). So you're not just comparing the weapons, you're comparing the delivery method too (the ship, having to deal with getting to 1 km range vs. shooting from 50 km), so you're really comparing Amarr ships with Gallente blaster ships. And then that's complicated too because Gallente ships have drones too, not just blasters.
So, eh. Big PVP fights I'd say you can't go wrong with lasers. Solo PVP fights, meh, you may need a versatile, e-war capable ship, so I'd say Gallente.

For general use lasers are 'better' due to less restrictions on range, but they make up for it by being a ***** to fit, being VERY cap intensive and their ships being sub-optimal.
Solo/small group Gallente ships work better than most Amarr ships, in bigger fleets or engagements Amarr make up for that.
