Since Quantum, though it could have been pure coincidence, my PC will crash when I`ve been in EVE from anywhere ranging within 5-45min.
The weird thing is, my monitors go black, as if they had lost the GPU signal or cables had been unplugged. I don't get the usual artifacts that would indicate a card failure, not blue screens. It just goes all black.
Anyone else experienced this? It does it with both premium or normal graphics on.
Weirdest thing is, if I play Fallout 3 or other high demanding games and my card is maxed there's not problem.
I tried upgrading to 178.24 drivers but no go.

search along this forum and you'll find other threads. Its been around for ages but I've found with the latest update that its happening more frequently. Had you been using an ATI card you would be informed it was a problem with ATI drivers (a thread from a while back had all sorts of cards suffering from it). Other suggestions that your PSU isn't up to supporting the demands made by the graphics card when running eve. This is dubious as there are much more demanding games around and following that theory running a graphics benchmark should cause problems. I've had it happen while eve is minimised so suspect its a side effect but whatever there is no indication that anything is being done about it. In the mean time try running at less than full screen with interval in the graphics settings set to 1.

Edited by: Bruder Falke on 16/11/2008 16:17:23 hi, same to me, monitors gos black.
i checked overheating, reinstalled driver, happens totally randomly. my only chance is to shut down the comp because i even dont get onto desktop. the monitors try to scan for "analog / digital" input signal after getting black.

Well I was going to respond here and I had Eve minimised, I opened eve and hit esc to do the interval thing when eve locked. Screen didn't turn black nor did comp freeze as I was able to ctrl/alt/del and turn off a none responding eve. Something is going on after QR patch.
Also for ATI users try this:
Follow this guys procedure regarding powerplay http://www.gamereplays.org/community/index.php?showtopic=348152&pid=4198980&st=0&
2nd thing try optimising ATI settings in Catylist control center. Click on "ATI Overdrive" in Graphics settings. Click on the lock icon so it is unlocked. click on "Auto Tune". Click on run. May take 5-10 minutes but let it run until completely done. This will maxamise your GPU and mem. clock settings.
Preliminary results are if I zoom in on ship in large fleet setting I still get a comp. freeze but not as often. If I zoom all the way out I have not yet experienced a freeze. So hopefully these ideas help you out. I have: Sapphire Radeon 4870 4 gig of ram Win xp OS Q6600 quad core (not yet OC'd)
All other areas of Eve seem to run fine. I can rat/mission and no problems.

This happened to me only one time, soon after the patch was released. It had something to do with my nHancer configuration I had at the time. I don't know which setting may have caused my 9800gx2 to crap out like that. I do know that ever since the Quantum Rise patch was deployed, my nHancer has been acting up quite a bit. Automatic profiles don't seem to work for Eve anymore, even though the .exe files are the same.
Another thing, my SLI performance mode is split-frame rendering. When I use this mode and force Anti-aliasing (No HDR), the AA seems to break whenever there is a session change. I can fix this temporarily by Alt-tabbing in and out of the game, but it gets on my nerves. I've had this issue prior to Quantum Rise, but now it happens much more frequently.
I'm glad to see there are other members of this community who have a 9800gx2 and are willing to share information about their setups. Now I know I'm not alone.

I had this issue but it seems to be fixed now.
I went to Display Properties/settings. I pressed the advanced button to get to the other settings regarding the GPU. Selected Trouble shooting tab. There is a box Enable write conbining which I unticked and since then I have had no crashes.
I can even dual account again which was a guaranteed crash with a black screen within seconds.

Well I have discovered that EVE does not like SLI at all. Im running duel 9800 GX2's and when im not in SLI mode the game runs flawless with up to 4 clients running in windows mode at 200 plus FPS at 1900 x 1200 resolution. Took me forever to figure out what was causing it but tonight i found the culprit. I did each setting by itself and when i got to the Quad SLI setting i loaded eve and BAM totall computer lock up. I switched back to non SLI and the game is running fine again. I also tried every driver and am currently using the 180.43 beta drivers that are optimized for Far Cry2. I tried the 174 drivers in non sli and it worked fine soon as i flipped the SLI switch it crashed. Same thing goes for the 180 drivers. I am convinced it is not a driver problem and its simply EVE is no up to date with SLI technology. As for people having crashes with just a single 9800 GX2 that i read in here i have never had a problem running just one card. All for of my gpus are over clocked to 700 core 1100 memory and 1800 shader clock but of course my whole system is water cooled i have yet to get a gpu temp above 48 celsius. Hope this helped some of you.

The benefits you see from running 2 cards in SLI are completely dependent on the hardware and drivers that control the rendering of frames, not the game the itself. However it is also important to note that certain newer games, like FarCry 2 and Crysis, can have additional visual optimizations of their own based on how their software engineers have coded the game to interpret the configurations of the users playing their games. These optimizations are minimal, but can exist.
So now you're probably thinking, well if the rendering of the game is all dependent on the hardware backend, and not the game itself, why am I not seeing the benefits that an SLI setup should provide? Furthermore, why is the game not working when I'm in SLI?
The most likely reason for issues like this to happen is an improper configuration in your driver's program settings. I'm sure most of you reading this thread have fooled around with the graphics options in the Nvidia Control Panel, trying to find the best configuration to get the most performance/quality out of your GFX cards. It is true that the Nvidia Control Panel is useful for most novice and advanced users, however there's more food on the plate than meets the eye.
I recommend anyone who is either having visual problems with any of the games they play, or just want to tweak their GFX setup to the max, to download and install nHancer. This tool expands the list of configurable graphics settings not seen in the Nvidia Control Panel. It is useful for both debugging gfx issues in the favorite games you play or simply optimizing visual performance/quality in those specific applications.

Sorry i dont think so.
If you got a real SLI nhancer will improve performance. But nhancer is not made for multi-gpu cards. i tried nhancer with several games, and did not see any improvemend to my X2 card... Also i did not change any settings of my nvidia driver. why should i? i dont like 2000% performance while my card is at 400ŚC and vanishes with smoke after some weeks... i am using standard, nothing else.
Can someone explain me what these graphic options "24bit buffer Z..." and like that stand for? this is almost the same like nhancer does... but what exactly does it stand for? i would like to read a lil bit more about that...
thnx

Thanks for insight on SLI. I relize what your saying and i know they will probably not make it to where SLI can run this game properly for awhile, its just a pain in the rear having to switch back and forth from non SLI to SLI when playing different games. The pain part is that it resets my over clocks on all 4 gpu's and messes up my desktop icons. So far EVE has been the only game that does this, even my older games like Ultima Online, EQ2, WOW, will run fine in SLI even if im not getting the benfits of it. I will say that when i was running SLI in EVE and before the game crashed i was getting 70 more FPS so there was a tad bit of difference but nothing to rave about.

Well from what you're telling me, it sounds like the driver is trying to use an SLI mode that isn't compatible with your setup. The Nvidia-predefined profiles for EverQuest 2 and WoW use an SLI mode that is different from the Nvidia-predefined one for Eve Online. I recommend that you use nHancer to change the default SLI mode for Eve Online from Alternate Frame Rendering 2 (AFR2) to 4-Way Alternate Frame Rendering (AFR-4W), the most common setting for Quad SLI setups.

simple hands on stuff. clean your pc of dust including power supply cpu and video card, check cpu temps aren't not causing overheating, or forcing the bios to shutdown the machine.
close other programs running. monitor memory and cpu usage of the client to spot memory leaks and such.
i have had some crashes when in warp or landing on grid. nothing like the screen going black but more like the client crashing. try turning premium content off. run only one client at a time. run in windowed mode so if the client does crash you maybe aren't faced with a black screen.
there is a setting in system properties that has windows restart the computer on system failure.. disable it and it should throw a blue screen and hopefully give you some useful information about the problem.
maybe its a stability problem... try stress testing your computer with some other program.. maybe 3d benchmark software http://www.futuremark.com/downloads
hopefully something in there will help you. |
